Small and medium businesses (SMEs) represent around 95% of all firms in the EU, employing two-thirds of the workforce and contributing over 50% to global GDP. This remarkable contribution is increasingly enabled by digital technology. As we emerge from the pandemic, the opportunities for SMEs to make additional use of technology, such as through digital transformation, will be a crucial factor in their resilience, sustainability and growth.

This essential role played by SMEs is why the European Commission is focusing on digital transformation as part of its European Industrial Strategy for 2021-2030. The goal is to ensure SMEs have the right skills and tools they need to stay competitive and take advantage of digital opportunities.
