About Amazon
Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) operates an online shopping business, a marketplace for independent sellers and a cloud computing platform. Customers use Amazon to buy products sold by the company or other merchants. Its fulfilment network supports storage, packing and delivery, while services such as Prime bring shopping and entertainment benefits into a membership.
Amazon also serves businesses through Amazon Web Services, or AWS. Companies use AWS to access computing power, store information and run applications without building all the required infrastructure themselves. Amazon's advertising services help brands reach shoppers and other audiences. These activities connect different customer groups: consumers looking for products, sellers looking for customers, advertisers looking for attention and businesses looking for computing services.
How Amazon Makes Money
Amazon earns revenue from product sales, seller fees, subscriptions, advertising and AWS. When it sells its own inventory, it records the product sale. When an independent merchant sells through its marketplace, Amazon generally earns fees for selling, storage, fulfilment and other services. The merchant's entire order value is therefore different from Amazon's revenue. Prime adds membership income, while advertisers pay to promote products and reach relevant audiences.
AWS customers pay for services such as computing, databases and storage, with charges linked to usage and service commitments. These businesses have different costs: retail must cover merchandise and delivery, while cloud services require substantial investment in data centres. AWS has historically earned higher operating margins than Amazon's retail segments. Advertising is also an important revenue stream, although Amazon does not report its profit separately. Understanding this mix helps explain why growth in total sales and growth in profit can differ.
