FAQs

What is the lot size for Sensex Futures?

Sensex Futures trade in lots of 20 units on BSE. One contract controls 20 units of the underlying. Margin and P&L are both calculated on this lot size - not on the full notional contract value.

When do Sensex Futures expire?

Sensex Futures expire on the last Thursday of the month. INDmoney shows near, mid, and far month contracts — switch between them using the expiry tabs above. Positions not closed before expiry are cash-settled at the final settlement price on expiry day.

What is basis in Sensex Futures?

Basis is the difference between the Sensex Futures price and the Sensex spot price. A positive basis means futures are trading above spot; a negative basis means below. Basis typically narrows toward zero as the contract approaches expiry.

How much margin is needed to trade Sensex Futures?

Sensex Futures require SPAN margin plus exposure margin as set by BSE. The exact amount changes daily based on volatility. You can check the current margin requirement on INDmoney before placing an order — you do not pay the full contract value upfront.

Can I exit Sensex Futures before expiry?

Yes. You can square off your Sensex Futures position any time during market hours by taking the opposite trade — sell to exit a buy, buy to exit a sell. Most traders close before expiry. Index futures like Sensex are always cash-settled at expiry — there is no physical delivery of shares, so no additional margin is needed at expiry.

What are the taxes and charges on Sensex Futures?

Gains and losses on Sensex Futures are treated as non-speculative business income and taxed at your income slab rate. STT applies on the sell side. Brokerage, exchange transaction charges, GST, and SEBI turnover charges also apply. F&O losses can be set off against other business income and carried forward for up to 8 years. Consult a tax advisor for your specific situation.
