SENSEX Call & Put Options Explained
A SENSEX option gives you the right — not the obligation — to benefit from a move in the SENSEX index, for a premium you pay upfront.
Call options (CE)
A call option gains value when SENSEX rises. Buyers of calls are positioning for an up-move; the premium is the most a buyer can lose.
Put options (PE)
A put option gains value when SENSEX falls. Buyers of puts are positioning for a down-move, or hedging an existing long position.
In, at and out of the money
A call is in-the-money when SENSEX is above its strike; a put is in-the-money when SENSEX is below its strike. The strike closest to the current SENSEX level is at-the-money, and these ATM strikes are usually the most actively traded in the chain.
Open Interest & Volume in the SENSEX Option Chain
Open interest and volume are the two columns traders watch most in the chain — they show where positions are building and where the day's activity is.
What open interest (OI) tells you
Open interest is the total number of outstanding contracts at a strike. A large OI build-up at a call strike can mark a resistance level; a large OI build-up at a put strike can mark a support level. Change in OI shows whether positions are being added or unwound today.
What volume tells you
Volume is the number of contracts traded during the session. Unlike OI, it resets each day, so it highlights which strikes are seeing fresh interest right now — useful for spotting where intraday attention is moving.
