VTI tracks the CRSP US Total Market Index, maintained by the Center for Research in Security Prices, which represents approximately 100% of the investable US stock market, including large-cap, mid-cap, small-cap, and micro-cap companies regularly traded on the NYSE and Nasdaq. The index has used different benchmarks historically, moving from the Dow Jones US Total Stock Market Index to the MSCI US Broad Market Index, and finally to the CRSP index in mid-2013.

Because the fund spans the full market-capitalisation spectrum, its sector composition closely mirrors the broader US economy, with information technology typically representing the largest sector weight given the scale of mega-cap technology companies, followed by consumer discretionary, industrials, financials, and health care.
