The long-awaited Jio Platforms IPO is officially here! Jio Platforms Limited filed its RHP on October 14, 2026. The IPO will open on October 21 and close on October 23, 2026, with a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share.
There is another important detail for Reliance Industries (RIL) shareholders. Jio has reserved shares worth up to ₹2,500 crore for eligible RIL shareholders.
But does owning RIL shares make you eligible? Is one share enough? Can you apply under both the shareholder and retail categories? Let's understand the rules and application process in simple terms.
Who Is Eligible for Jio's Shareholder Quota?
The most important detail is the eligibility date: October 14, 2026, the date Jio Platforms filed its RHP.
To qualify, you must meet the RHP's conditions for holding public equity shares of Reliance Industries. Eligible applicants include individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), subject to the applicable rules.
Here is what this means:
- Held RIL shares on October 14: You may qualify for the shareholder quota if you meet the other conditions.
- Bought RIL shares on or after October 15: You cannot become eligible by buying shares after the cutoff date.
- Own shares in another Reliance Group company: That alone does not qualify you. You must meet the conditions for holding RIL shares directly.
Is even one RIL share enough?
Yes. As specified in the RHP, even one RIL share can meet the shareholding requirement, provided you satisfy the other eligibility conditions, including the applicable PAN and demat-related requirements.
Remember, qualifying for the quota only makes you eligible to apply. It does not guarantee that you will receive Jio shares.
How Much Can You Apply For?
Jio has reserved up to ₹2,500 crore worth of shares specifically for eligible RIL shareholders.
Maximum Application Limit: Under the RIL Shareholders Reservation Portion, the maximum amount you can bid for is ₹2 Lakhs.
Does the Quota Guarantee Allotment? No. Having a reserved quota does not mean guaranteed share allotment. If the category receives more applications than available shares, allotment is made on a proportionate basis. If any part of this shareholder quota remains unsubscribed, it spills over to eligible employees, and then to the general public retail and non-institutional categories.
Can You Apply Under Both Shareholder and Retail Categories?
Yes, Reliance shareholders get a double advantage!
The RHP explicitly permits eligible RIL shareholders to submit two separate applications using the same PAN without any risk of rejection:
- Application 1: Under the RIL Shareholders Reservation Portion (up to ₹2 Lakhs).
- Application 2: Under the general Net Issue, either in the Retail Category (up to ₹2 Lakhs) OR the Non-Institutional Category (above ₹2 Lakhs).
What is the Non-Institutional Category? If you wish to apply for more than ₹2 Lakhs, you fall under the Non-Institutional Category (NII). Unlike Retail applicants, NII bidders cannot bid at the "Cut-Off Price" and cannot cancel or lower their bids once submitted.
How to Apply Under the Shareholder Quota
Applying is quick and straightforward. Just follow these 4 simple steps:
- Log In to Your App: Open your bank's Net Banking (ASBA) or your broker app (INDmoney, Zerodha, Groww, AngelOne, etc.).
- Select the Right Category: Choose "RIL Shareholder" as your investor category when applying for the Jio IPO.
- Verify PAN & Demat: Make sure the PAN on your application matches the PAN linked to your RIL Demat account.
- Submit & Approve Mandate: Enter your bid amount (up to ₹2 Lakhs), select "Cut-Off Price", and approve the UPI mandate or ASBA payment before 7:00 PM on October 23, 2026.
Important Rules to Avoid Rejection:
- Use Your Own Bank Account: Always pay using a bank account or UPI ID registered in your own name. Third-party payments will lead to instant technical rejection.
- Note for Joint Account Holders: If you hold RIL shares jointly, only the first-named holder in the Demat account can apply using their own PAN and bank account.
What Should Investors Remember?
Before submitting your application, keep these key points in mind:
Cut-off Date is Final: Your eligibility was locked on October 14, 2026. Buying RIL shares today (After October 14, 2026) will not grant eligibility for this IPO.
Quota ≠ Assured Listing Gains: A reserved quota gives you a dedicated bidding pool, but share allotment remains subject to demand, and equity investments carry market risks.
Do Your Due Diligence: Always review Jio Platforms' financial health, growth drivers, and risk factors outlined in the offer document before investing.
