The company operates primarily in the oil and gas sector, with a significant presence across the natural gas value chain. As a Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), GAIL plays a crucial role in India's energy infrastructure. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025 (FY25), GAIL's natural gas transmission volume averaged 127.32 million metric standard cubic meters per day (MMSCMD), an increase of 6% year-over-year. During the same period, its gas marketing volume was 101.49 MMSCMD. The company also reported polymer production of 827 thousand metric tonnes (TMT) in FY25, a 6% increase from the previous year.
GAIL (India) Ltd is engaged in a wide array of activities centered around natural gas. Its core operations include the transmission (transportation) of natural gas through its extensive pipeline network, which spans over 13,800 kilometers across India as of late 2021. The company is also a major player in natural gas marketing and trading. Beyond natural gas, GAIL has diversified interests in petrochemicals, producing polymers and other chemical products. It processes natural gas to produce Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and other liquid hydrocarbons. Furthermore, GAIL is involved in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) re-gasification, City Gas Distribution (CGD) in various urban areas, and has ventures in Exploration and Production (E&P) of oil and gas. The company's primary revenue generation comes from the sale and transmission of natural gas, followed by petrochemicals and liquid hydrocarbons. For FY25, the natural gas marketing segment was the largest contributor to its profit before interest and tax (PBIT), which grew by 22.7% year-over-year, while the natural gas transmission segment's PBIT improved by 21.3% in the same period.
Natural Gas Transmission
GAIL owns and operates a large network of natural gas pipelines for transporting gas to various customers, including power plants, fertilizer units, and other industrial consumers. In FY25, the company transported an average of 127.32 MMSCMD of natural gas.

The petrochemicals segment narrowed its losses in FY25 compared to the previous fiscal year.
LPG and Liquid Hydrocarbons (LHC)

City Gas Distribution (CGD)
Through its joint ventures and subsidiaries, GAIL is involved in supplying Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers, and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for the transport sector in various cities. The CGD segment, as part of GAIL's 'other segments', reported a strong PBIT growth of 44.3% in FY25.
Renewable Energy
GAIL is expanding its footprint in the renewable energy sector, with a focus on solar and wind power projects as part of its efforts to diversify its energy portfolio and contribute to sustainable development.
Other Ventures
GAIL also has interests in LNG re-gasification terminals, Exploration & Production of oil and gas, and telecommunication services (GAILTEL).
GAIL (India) Ltd is focused on expanding its core natural gas infrastructure and diversifying into cleaner energy sources. The company is actively working towards increasing its renewable energy portfolio, with plans to set up 1 GW of renewable energy capacity. In line with this, GAIL signed an agreement with the Karnataka government in May 2025 to establish 1 GW of renewable energy projects in the state. The company has also previously stated an aim to invest significantly in renewable energy projects by 2025 and further expand its renewable capacity to 3 GW by 2030. GAIL is also exploring new avenues in the gas sector, such as promoting LNG as a fuel for long-haul transportation, evidenced by its recent memorandum of understanding with Container Corporation of India to investigate LNG use in the logistics industry. The company continues to invest in expanding its pipeline network and city gas distribution to support India's goal of increasing the share of natural gas in its energy mix to 15% by 2030.
