Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) was incorporated in 1986 and is based in New Delhi. It is registered with the RBI as a systemically important NBFC Company. It serves as the dedicated financial arm of Indian Railways under the Ministry of Railways, GoI. IRFC helps Indian Railways run smoothly by raising funds from the market and lending them for operations and project execution.
It achieves this by borrowing from banks, issuing bonds (including tax-free ones), and taking overseas loans to finance rolling stock, such as locomotives and coaches, as well as key railway infrastructure projects.
