Bajaj Finance shares rose after the company released its provisional business update for the September quarter.

The update points to continued strong growth across the lending business and customer base. But for investors, the more important question is not just whether Bajaj Finance is growing. It is what is driving that growth and whether the company can eventually convert it into equally strong earnings without putting pressure on margins or asset quality.

The Q2 business update gives an early view of the scale and pace of growth. The detailed financial results will tell us much more about the profitability and quality behind it.

Bajaj Finance Q2 FY27 Business Update

MetricQ2 FY27Q2 FY26YoY Change
Assets under management₹5,84,750 crore₹4,62,261 crore+26.5%
New loans booked13.45 million12.17 million+11%
Customer franchise128.85 million110.64 million+16.5%

Bajaj Finance has clarified that these figures are provisional and subject to review by its statutory auditors.

Why Is Bajaj Finance Share Price Rising?

The biggest positive in the update is the pace of AUM growth.

Bajaj Finance's assets under management increased 26.5% year-on-year to approximately ₹5,84,750 crore as of September 30, 2026 from ₹4,62,261 crore a year earlier. The company also added approximately ₹37,800 crore of AUM during Q2 alone.

For a lender, AUM broadly represents the size of the loan book. A larger loan book creates a bigger base from which interest income can be generated.

The scale of the quarterly addition is particularly notable. Adding nearly ₹38,000 crore of AUM in three months suggests that Bajaj Finance continues to grow strongly even from an already large base. But that is only one part of the story.

AUM Grew 26.5%, But New Loans Grew Only 11%

Bajaj Finance booked 13.45 million new loans during Q2 FY27 compared with 12.17 million in Q2 FY26. That represents growth of 11%.

At first glance, that looks much weaker than the 26.5% growth in AUM.

However, Bajaj Finance itself has cautioned that the year-on-year volume comparison is not directly comparable because the festival season started earlier last year. Festive periods can increase consumer financing volumes, which can distort the comparison between two quarters.

So the 11% growth figure should not be read in isolation.

The more interesting question is why the value of the loan book is growing much faster than the number of loans being booked.

One possible explanation is loan mix. If Bajaj Finance is originating more large-ticket loans, AUM can grow much faster even if the number of loans does not increase at the same pace.

That makes the upcoming detailed results important. Investors will want to know which lending categories are contributing most to incremental growth and whether the growth is coming from higher volumes, larger loan sizes or a change in product mix.

Customer Growth Remains Another Strong Signal

Bajaj Finance's customer franchise increased to 128.85 million as of September 30, 2026 from 110.64 million a year earlier.

The company also added 4.42 million customers during Q2 FY27 alone. This matters because Bajaj Finance's large customer base is an important part of its business model.

A customer who enters the ecosystem through one lending product can potentially be offered other financial products over time. This gives Bajaj Finance an opportunity to grow its business without depending entirely on acquiring a completely new customer for every loan.

But customer growth should not be viewed as an end in itself.

The real value comes from how effectively Bajaj Finance can convert this expanding customer base into profitable lending relationships while controlling credit risk.

What Does the ₹69,750 Crore Deposit Book Tell Us?

Bajaj Finance's deposit book stood at approximately ₹69,750 crore as of September 30, 2026.

This is another important number because rapid loan growth needs to be supported by sufficient funding.

Bajaj Finance funds its lending operations through different sources including deposits and borrowings. As AUM expands, the company needs its funding base to grow alongside it.

But investors should look beyond the absolute size of deposits.

What eventually matters is the cost at which Bajaj Finance is raising money. A lender earns money from the difference between what it charges borrowers and what it pays to raise funds.

If funding costs remain under control, faster AUM growth can translate more effectively into earnings. If funding becomes expensive, strong loan growth may not produce equally strong profit growth.

Why Strong AUM Growth Does Not Automatically Mean Strong Profit Growth

This is the most important distinction in the Q2 update. AUM growth tells us Bajaj Finance is lending more. It does not tell us how profitable those loans will be.

A lender's profit depends on several moving parts. It needs to earn sufficient interest on loans, control the cost of funding, manage operating expenses and keep credit losses under control.

That means a 26.5% rise in AUM does not automatically translate into 26.5% profit growth.

For investors, the quality of growth matters just as much as the pace of growth.

If Bajaj Finance can continue expanding AUM while maintaining healthy lending spreads and controlling bad loans, the larger loan book can support strong earnings growth.

But if faster growth comes with weaker pricing or greater credit risk, the headline AUM number becomes less attractive.

What Should Bajaj Finance Investors Track in the Detailed Q2 Results?

  • Asset quality: Rapid AUM growth is positive only if bad loans remain under control. Any meaningful deterioration in asset quality would change how investors view the current growth rate.
  • Credit costs: Higher provisions can reduce profitability even before headline NPA numbers worsen significantly. Credit costs will therefore be an important indicator of whether faster lending is creating additional stress.
  • Net interest margins: Investors should watch whether Bajaj Finance is maintaining healthy spreads between lending yields and funding costs as the loan book expands.
  • Loan mix: The gap between 26.5% AUM growth and 11% growth in new loans makes the composition of lending particularly important. Investors need to understand which segments are driving the increase in AUM.
  • Customer monetisation: Bajaj Finance added 4.42 million customers during the quarter. The longer-term value depends on whether the company can convert this growing customer base into more profitable relationships.

Author's Take

Bajaj Finance's Q2 update is clearly strong in terms of scale. AUM has reached nearly ₹5.85 lakh crore and is still growing at 26.5%, while the customer franchise has expanded to almost 129 million.

But the most interesting part of the update is not the headline growth rate alone.

AUM grew more than twice as fast as new loan volumes. That means the detailed results need to explain what is driving the gap and whether the company is growing through larger ticket sizes, a different product mix or stronger demand in specific lending categories.

For now, the business update shows that Bajaj Finance's growth engine remains strong. The bigger question will be answered when the detailed results arrive: whether that growth is translating into equally strong profitability without weakening margins or asset quality.
