RBL Bank's share price fell nearly 8% during trading on October 13, 2026, touching an intraday low of ₹381.40. Surprisingly, the fall came just a day after the bank reported a 170% increase in quarterly profit to ₹482 crore.

So, why are investors selling when the bank is making more money? The concern is not the profit growth itself, but whether RBL Bank can turn its rapid business expansion and fresh capital into better returns for shareholders. Its latest results show clear improvements, but also reveal some weaknesses that investors cannot ignore.

RBL Bank Q2 Results: How Did the Bank Perform?

RBL Bank reported strong earnings for the July–September 2026 quarter. Its interest income improved, operating expenses remained under control, and the proportion of bad loans declined.

Here is how the bank performed compared with the same quarter last year.

MetricQ2 FY27Q2 FY26
Net profit₹482 crore₹179 crore
Net interest income₹2,131 crore₹1,551 crore
Operating profit₹1,396 crore₹728 crore
Net interest margin4.61%4.51%
Gross NPA1.02%2.32%
Return on equity4.43%4.44%

The biggest improvement was in net interest income, which increased 37%. This is the money a bank earns from interest after deducting the interest it pays on deposits and other borrowings.

RBL Bank also improved its spending efficiency. Its operating expenses increased only about 3%, while total income after interest costs grew 29%. This helped operating profit jump 92%.

Another positive was the improvement in bad loans. Gross NPAs, which measure loans where borrowers have stopped making scheduled payments, fell to 1.02% from 2.32% a year earlier.

However, provisions for potential loan losses rose to approximately ₹767 crore from ₹500 crore. This shows that even though the overall proportion of bad loans has improved, the bank still needs to set aside money against lending risks.

Why Did RBL Bank Share Price Fall Despite Strong Q2 Results?

Despite reporting 170% profit growth, RBL Bank's earnings disappointed some analysts. Emkay Global reported that the bank's quarterly profit was 4% below its expectations, primarily because provisions were 32% higher than estimated. This helps explain the negative market reaction: investors were not simply looking at how much profit increased from last year, but whether the bank delivered the earnings they expected.

In June 2026, UAE-based Emirates NBD completed an investment of approximately ₹26,000 crore in RBL Bank, acquiring 60% of its expanded share capital.

This gave RBL Bank substantially more capital to expand its business. However, the investment also resulted in the issue of a large number of new shares.

Here is why this matters.

RBL Bank's consolidated profit increased approximately 159% year-on-year to ₹498 crore. Yet its consolidated earnings per share (EPS), which measures how much profit is attributable to each share, increased only about 2%, from ₹3.15 to ₹3.22.

The difference is largely explained by the higher number of shares following the capital infusion. The 170% profit growth reported in the headline refers to standalone results, while these EPS figures are consolidated.

For existing investors, this creates an important distinction: a company can earn substantially more profit without generating a similarly large increase in profit per share.

The bank's return on equity (ROE) also remained weak at 4.43%, almost unchanged from 4.44% a year earlier. ROE measures how much profit a business generates from the money invested by its shareholders.

RBL Bank now has significantly more capital, but it still needs to demonstrate that it can use that money profitably. This helps explain why the market has reacted cautiously despite strong reported earnings.

Can RBL Bank Sustain Its Rapid Loan and Deposit Growth?

RBL Bank's total advances increased 42% year-on-year to ₹1.42 lakh crore, while deposits increased 34% to ₹1.56 lakh crore.

However, the headline growth figures need closer examination. Excluding foreign currency non-resident (FCNR) deposits, RBL Bank's deposit growth was just 6%, compared with the reported 34%. Similarly, loan growth excluding FCNR-linked lending was approximately 30%, against the headline 42%. This shows that the bank's underlying expansion, although healthy on the lending side, was considerably slower than the headline numbers suggest.

There is also an important concern on the deposit side.

RBL Bank's CASA ratio fell from 31.86% to 27.21%. CASA refers to current and savings account deposits, which generally cost banks less than fixed deposits and other forms of borrowing.

A lower CASA ratio does not automatically mean the bank is facing financial trouble. However, it means a smaller proportion of its deposits comes from these relatively inexpensive sources.

This matters because the bank must earn enough interest on its loans to cover what it pays depositors and other lenders. If funding costs remain high or lending returns decline, future profits could come under pressure.

Has Emirates NBD's Investment Made RBL Bank Stronger?

The investment has significantly improved RBL Bank's financial strength.

Its capital adequacy ratio, which measures the financial cushion available to absorb potential losses, stood at 30.10% in September 2026 compared with 15.02% a year earlier.

This gives RBL Bank more room to expand lending, invest in technology and grow its customer base without immediately needing another large capital raise.

The Emirates NBD partnership could also help RBL Bank expand its international banking relationships and attract deposits from customers with overseas connections.

However, having more money available to lend and earning attractive returns from that money are two different things.

The challenge for RBL Bank is to increase lending without compromising loan quality, while improving profits enough to justify its larger shareholder capital base.

That transition will take time, and investors will likely judge the bank on its progress over several quarters rather than on one strong earnings report.

Is RBL Bank Share Price Valuation Justified After Its Rally?

RBL Bank shares had already recorded a substantial rally before the Q2 results. This meant expectations for stronger growth and profitability were relatively high.

At its October 13 intraday low of ₹381.40, RBL Bank was trading at approximately 1.4 times its book value. This means investors were paying around ₹1.40 for every ₹1 of the bank's net assets. However, the bank's reported return on equity was just 4.43%. The important question is whether RBL Bank can improve profitability sufficiently to justify that valuation. The Emirates NBD partnership provides opportunities for growth, but stronger lending, better margins and higher returns on capital will determine whether that valuation becomes sustainable.

A bank with consistently high ROE can often justify a higher valuation. But a bank with relatively low ROE needs to demonstrate that profitability can improve before investors become comfortable paying a higher price for it.

This is where analysts differ on RBL Bank. Some believe the Emirates NBD partnership and improving loan quality could support stronger profits over the next few years. Others argue that the stock's valuation already reflects much of this potential improvement.

For investors, the important question is whether RBL Bank can deliver the earnings growth that its valuation increasingly depends on.

What Should RBL Bank Investors Watch Next?

RBL Bank's Q2 results suggest that its earnings recovery is progressing. Interest income has improved, bad loans have declined, and the bank has a much stronger capital position.

However, three developments will matter most in the coming quarters: whether ROE improves, whether the bank maintains healthy lending margins, and whether its deposit base becomes more cost-efficient.

The bank also needs to demonstrate that rapid loan growth can produce higher earnings per share without creating fresh bad-loan problems.

The bottom line: RBL Bank's 170% profit growth shows that its earnings recovery is progressing, but the share-price fall highlights three concerns: profits falling short of expectations, slower underlying deposit growth and the possibility of weaker margins next quarter. Emirates NBD's investment has made the bank financially stronger, but investors will now be watching whether that capital can generate better returns per share. Until profitability improves meaningfully, headline profit growth alone may not be enough to sustain investor confidence.
