Computer Age Management Services (CAMS) shares fell around 5% following its Q2 FY27 results, even though the company reported a 14.4% increase in profit and record mutual fund assets of ₹58.4 lakh crore. Revenue grew 10%, while operating margins improved compared with last year.

However, the quarterly numbers reveal a different picture. Profit grew just 2.7% compared with the previous quarter, while profit margins declined. More importantly, CAMS's mutual fund assets are growing faster than its revenue. So, why is the market concerned despite strong business growth?

CAMS Q2 Results: What Do the Numbers Show?

CAMS reported healthy year-on-year growth in revenue and profit. However, sequential growth remained relatively modest.

Financial MetricQ2 FY27Q2 FY26Q1 FY27
Revenue₹414.47 Cr₹376.74 Cr₹395.03 Cr
Net Profit*₹131.49 Cr₹114.94 Cr₹128.02 Cr

Net profit attributable to shareholders, based on consolidated results.

Revenue increased 10% YoY, while net profit grew 14.4%. EBITDA also increased 13.5% to ₹190.86 crore, with the EBITDA margin improving to 46%.

However, compared with the previous quarter, revenue increased 4.9%, while profit grew only 2.7%. PAT margin also declined from 31.1% to 30.7%.

This indicates that while CAMS continues to grow, its recent profit growth has been slower than revenue growth. For a business with relatively high operating margins, investors may be concerned about whether this trend will continue.

Mutual Fund Assets Are Growing Faster Than CAMS Revenue

One of the most interesting aspects of CAMS's results is the difference between mutual fund asset growth and revenue growth.

CAMS provides essential services to mutual fund companies, including maintaining investor records, processing transactions and managing investor-related services.

Its mutual fund assets under management reached a record ₹58.4 lakh crore, growing 12.1% YoY. The company also maintained its dominant position with approximately 67% market share.

Other operating metrics remained strong.

  • Equity mutual fund AUM: Increased 15.5% YoY to ₹33.2 lakh crore.
  • SIP collections: Increased 16.5% YoY to ₹61,369 crore.
  • Live SIP accounts: Reached 6.96 crore, growing 12.9% YoY.

Despite this growth, CAMS's overall revenue increased only 10%.

Why Is CAMS Revenue Growing Slower Than Mutual Fund Assets?

CAMS earns fees for providing services to asset management companies. Its revenue depends on factors such as assets serviced, transaction volumes, contractual pricing and business mix.

This means a 15% increase in mutual fund assets does not necessarily result in a 15% increase in revenue.

Importantly, the comparison is between mutual fund AUM growth and CAMS's total revenue growth, which includes businesses outside mutual funds. Therefore, it does not directly establish pricing pressure.

However, it raises an important question for investors. As India's mutual fund industry continues expanding, how much additional revenue can CAMS generate from that growth?

The company is capturing a significant share of new business. CAMS accounted for approximately 70% of the mutual fund industry's equity net sales over the previous 12 months.

Therefore, the issue is not necessarily declining market share. Instead, investors may be assessing whether higher business volumes can translate into faster revenue and profit growth.

Can Non-Mutual Fund Businesses Drive Future Growth?

CAMS is gradually expanding beyond traditional mutual fund services into payments, alternative investments, insurance and other financial services.

These businesses grew 21.7% YoY in Q2 FY27, more than twice the company's overall revenue growth.

Their contribution to total revenue increased from 14.4% to 15.9%.

CAMSPay, the company's payments business, recorded 52.2% YoY revenue growth and crossed 6% of total revenue for the first time.

Similarly, CAMS Alternatives reported 22% revenue growth, with assets serviced exceeding ₹3.3 lakh crore.

These businesses could become important growth drivers because they are expanding faster than CAMS's traditional operations.

However, mutual fund-related services still account for approximately 84% of revenue. This means strong growth in smaller businesses may take time to meaningfully accelerate the company's overall earnings.

What Should CAMS Investors Watch?

CAMS continues to benefit from India's expanding mutual fund industry, supported by growing SIP participation and its strong market position.

However, future performance will depend on three important factors.

First, whether CAMS can improve sequential profit growth and maintain its operating margins.

Second, whether rising mutual fund assets and transaction volumes can translate into faster revenue growth.

Third, whether its non-mutual fund businesses can become large enough to make a meaningful contribution to overall profitability.

Author's Take

CAMS's Q2 results were not fundamentally weak. The company reported higher revenue, stronger annual profits and record mutual fund assets while maintaining its leadership position in the industry.

However, the 5% share decline highlights a possible gap between business performance and investor expectations. Sequential profit growth was modest, margins softened, and total revenue growth remained below the pace of mutual fund asset expansion.

The bigger question is whether CAMS can convert India's growing mutual fund participation into faster earnings growth. Its strong market position provides an advantage, but sustained revenue growth, stable margins and contributions from newer businesses will be important in determining its future performance.
