You have kept ₹10,000 aside to invest this Diwali. Your family plans to buy shares during Muhurat Trading, but you want to put the money into an equity mutual fund. If you press “Invest” during the session, will you receive units at a special Diwali price?
The answer depends on what happens after that tap. A platform may accept your request on a holiday, while the actual investment follows the mutual fund’s business-day, payment and pricing rules. Understanding that difference also explains why an SIP debit and unit allotment can happen on different dates.
Are Mutual Funds Available During Muhurat Trading 2026?
You may be able to submit a mutual fund purchase request during Muhurat Trading, if your platform accepts holiday orders. That does not mean units are purchased during the special session. Ordinary open-ended mutual funds follow their own transaction rules rather than a live exchange price.
Muhurat Trading falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026. NSE’s capital-market session begins continuous trading at 2:20 PM IST. The detailed Muhurat Trading schedule explains the different exchange windows; these are not mutual fund purchase deadlines.
A special stock-market opening does not automatically make Sunday a business day for every mutual fund. Your scheme’s business-day definition, transaction channel and any specific AMC notice still matter. Without a verified exception, a holiday request should be understood as awaiting the next eligible processing day.
There is no separate “Muhurat NAV” available simply because you placed an order during the session. The same distinction applies to redemption requests: an app accepting a withdrawal instruction does not promise Diwali pricing or immediate payment into your bank account.
What Happens if You Buy a Mutual Fund on Diwali?
Suppose you submit a ₹10,000 equity mutual fund order on November 8 and your bank immediately confirms payment. There are four separate stages before you can establish what you have bought.
First, the platform records your order. An acknowledgement confirms receipt of your request. It does not, by itself, confirm the applicable NAV or number of units.
Next, the payment must reach the mutual fund. Money leaving your bank account and money becoming available for the scheme to use are different events. Banking arrangements, payment methods and transaction processing can affect the gap between them.
The applicable NAV is then determined under the scheme’s rules. The relevant conditions include receipt of a valid application at an official acceptance point and availability of the full purchase amount within the applicable deadline on an eligible business day.
Finally, units are allotted and the confirmation becomes available. The date on which your app displays those units need not be the NAV date used for the purchase. Check the transaction statement for the applicable NAV, units and amount rather than relying only on a payment-success message.
The practical lesson is to follow the order through to completion. If money has been debited but the order remains pending, check its status before placing another purchase and unintentionally investing twice.
Which NAV Will Apply to Your Diwali Mutual Fund Purchase?
Net asset value, or NAV, is the value of one mutual fund unit after accounting for the scheme’s assets and liabilities. For ordinary equity funds, the purchase uses an applicable closing NAV. You do not choose a live price during the Muhurat session.
For domestic equity, hybrid and most debt funds, the standard purchase cut-off is 3:00 PM on a business day. Both the valid application and the full purchase amount must meet the relevant receipt and availability conditions. An early order cannot secure that day’s NAV when the money reaches the fund too late.
Platforms can set earlier operational deadlines to allow time for processing. International schemes can have different provisions, so the general domestic-fund deadline should not be applied to every product.
Does a November 8 order automatically receive November 9 NAV?
No. Monday, November 9 is not listed as an NSE equity trading holiday, but that alone cannot establish the NAV for every mutual fund transaction. It must also be an eligible business day for your scheme, and the application and money must satisfy the applicable requirements.
For the ₹10,000 domestic equity-fund example, these are the possible outcomes:
| What happens after the Sunday order? | Applicable NAV outcome |
| The valid application qualifies by Monday’s cut-off, and the full amount is available to the scheme before 3:00 PM; Monday is a scheme business day | November 9 closing NAV can apply |
| The application qualifies, but the money becomes available only after Monday’s cut-off | A later eligible business day’s NAV applies under the purchase rules |
| Monday is a non-business day for that scheme, or the request does not qualify in time | November 9 NAV cannot be assumed; the next qualifying business day matters |

Tuesday, November 10 is also an NSE trading holiday for Diwali-Balipratipada. If your transaction misses Monday’s conditions, do not simply assume Tuesday NAV will apply. Check the scheme’s calendar and the actual receipt details.
Are liquid and overnight funds different?
Yes. Their standard purchase cut-off is 1:30 PM, and their NAV rules differ from ordinary equity and debt funds. When a valid application and the full payment meet the prescribed conditions before that cut-off on a business day, the previous calendar day’s closing NAV applies.
For example, if November 9 is a business day for the scheme and both conditions are met in time, November 8 NAV can apply to a liquid or overnight fund purchase. These funds calculate NAV for every calendar day. A Sunday-dated NAV in this situation is therefore possible without a special Muhurat purchase facility.
Late applications or payments require the relevant liquid or overnight fund rule to be applied separately. Do not use the equity-fund example to predict their allotment price.
What Happens if Your SIP Date Falls on Diwali or Sunday?
A holiday does not automatically cancel your systematic investment plan, or SIP. Many AMC arrangements move a non-business-day instalment to the next business day, subject to their terms and successful payment. HDFC Mutual Fund’s published terms, for example, provide for the next business day when determining NAV applicability, subject to realisation of proceeds.
However, the scheduled SIP date, bank debit date, fund-receipt date and unit-allotment date can differ. The exact sequence depends on the AMC, bank, mandate, payment method and platform. A deduction on the 8th does not itself establish an entitlement to the 8th’s NAV.
If your instalment is scheduled for November 8, keep the required bank balance available and check that the autopay mandate is active. Follow the instalment’s status after the holiday. If it shows a failed payment rather than pending processing, check the reason and the applicable retry policy.
Also distinguish starting an SIP from completing an instalment. Registering an SIP on Diwali does not guarantee that its first payment and unit allotment will happen that day.
Can You Buy ETFs During Muhurat Trading Instead?
Eligible exchange-listed ETFs can trade during the special session, subject to exchange and broker availability. NSE’s 2026 ETF trading rules place ETFs in its capital-market segment, for which the exchange has announced the November 8 session. This does not establish that every ETF or every order facility will be available.
When buying an exchange-traded fund, you trade existing units through an exchange order book. Your order needs a matching seller, and its execution price can differ from the fund’s NAV. An ordinary open-ended mutual fund purchase instead receives units at its applicable NAV under the fund’s transaction rules.
Even an ETF and an index mutual fund tracking the same index therefore have different purchase mechanics. For an ETF, check the available sellers, the gap between buying and selling quotes, and the price relative to its underlying value. A limit order can control your maximum purchase price, although execution is not assured.
Does Investing on Muhurat Trading Day Improve Mutual Fund Returns?
The date does not give your fund better investments, lower expenses or protection against losses. Returns depend on what the fund owns, how those assets perform, its costs and the period over which you remain invested.
Diwali can still be a personally meaningful starting point. But a symbolic beginning does not require a particular NAV date, and there is no reason to change your chosen fund merely to obtain a transaction during the special session. For help evaluating the investment itself, the separate Diwali fund-selection guide addresses that decision.
What Should You Check Before Investing During Diwali?
Start with the exact scheme, plan and option you intend to buy. Check whether it accepts fresh investments, whether your KYC is complete and whether any scheme-specific non-business-day notice affects the transaction.
Then check the platform’s displayed deadline and holiday instructions. After placing the order, retain its reference number, track the payment and verify the final allotment statement. For an SIP, also review the mandate and debit status before assuming that a missing allotment means the instalment has failed.
Author’s Take: What Deserves Your Attention Beyond the Date?
I would use Diwali to record three things: the goal for this money, when it will be needed and the loss I could manage without disrupting that goal. Those answers should guide the mutual fund category, investment horizon and risk I accept.
Then I would keep the order acknowledgement until the statement confirms the investment. Choosing Diwali as your starting date is personal; confirming that the intended fund, amount and applicable NAV were recorded is a practical check you can complete afterwards.
