How A PMS Works In Simple Words
A PMS is a service where a professional manager buys and sells stocks for you. You need at least ₹50 lakh to start. Here is what that means for you:
- The stocks are yours. They sit in your own demat account. Unlike a mutual fund, your money is not pooled with other investors, so you can see exactly what you own.
- Your manager runs the portfolio. You choose the PMS and its strategy. Your manager handles the buying and selling.
- Your provider reports to you. You get updates by email or WhatsApp, and a login to see your portfolio on the provider's website.
| Who | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| You | You own the stocks, in your demat account, and you choose the PMS |
| PMS provider | Buys and sells the stocks, and reports to you |
| INDmoney | Shows your portfolio next to your other investments, without touching your money |
Every provider reports in its own way, with its own website and login. That is why a PMS is harder to keep track of than your other investments.
Why Should You Track Your PMS?
Your PMS is probably one of the biggest parts of your wealth. It is also one of the hardest to keep an eye on.
Your portfolio manager buys and sells stocks on your behalf, so your portfolio keeps changing. To know where you stand, you log in to your provider's website, or wait for the monthly or quarterly update on email or WhatsApp. If you hold more than one PMS, you repeat this for each one. And none of it shows up next to your mutual funds, stocks and other investments.
So it is easy to carry an incomplete picture of your wealth, or to assume everything is fine without checking.
That is the problem a PMS tracker solves. It brings your PMS into the same place as the rest of your investments, so you see one picture instead of several.
For example, say you hold ₹80 lakh in mutual funds, ₹60 lakh in stocks, ₹1 crore in one PMS and ₹60 lakh in another.
| What you hold | Amount |
|---|---|
| Mutual funds | ₹80 lakh |
| Stocks | ₹60 lakh |
| PMS 1 | ₹1 crore |
| PMS 2 | ₹60 lakh |
| Net worth without PMS | ₹1.4 crore |
| Net worth with PMS | ₹3 crore |
Without your PMS, you see ₹1.4 crore. You actually hold ₹3 crore. Any decision about the rest of your money, such as how much more to put in stocks, would be made on less than half the picture.
What PMS Tracking Helps You Understand
PMS tracking is more than checking one number. It helps you see:
- How much of my wealth is in PMS?
Seeing your PMS next to your mutual funds and stocks tells you how much of your total wealth depends on your portfolio manager. - Which stocks do I actually hold?
Your holdings show quantity, average price and gain or loss, so you know what your money is in, not just the total. - How much of it is in cash?
Cash is part of your PMS but it is not in stocks. Knowing the share tells you how much of your money is actually in the market. - Do a few stocks make up most of it?
Your top holdings show each stock's weight. If a few stocks carry most of the weight, a fall in them affects you more. - Where is my money sitting?
The sector and market cap split shows whether too much of your money sits in one area. - How has my value moved?
The chart from one day to five years lets you look at the bigger picture, not just one number. - How much do I hold across all my PMS?
With more than one PMS, the Overall view adds them up, so you do not have to total them yourself.
