Investors had been selling SK hynix shares on worries that the AI spending boom could lose steam. The chipmaker has now answered with its biggest-ever quarterly operating profit and a plan to return about $75 billion to shareholders this year.

On October 28, 2026, SK hynix reported Q3 operating profit of approximately $62.8 billion, and outlined about $75.4 billion, in shareholder returns for 2026. For a company supplying memory to the AI infrastructure buildout, it is a powerful statement about both current demand and the cash available to reward investors.

The tension behind the stock's recent fall remains worth understanding: are these profits and payouts becoming a lasting feature of the business, or does this year represent an unusually favourable point in the memory-chip cycle?

Why did SK hynix stock fall before its record earnings?

The recent selloff reflected concern about future profits rather than evidence that the latest quarter had weakened. On October 22, SK hynix's US-listed shares fell 8.07% to $131.69 during a wider semiconductor selloff, as investors reassessed the durability of AI infrastructure spending. For memory suppliers, customers' willingness to keep building data centres is central to future orders and pricing.

There was also uncertainty around funding the expansion of Solidigm, its US memory and storage subsidiary. On October 23, SK hynix halted its review of a potential Solidigm IPO, citing market conditions and share-price trends. The subsidiary's investment needs remained, but the formal announcement followed the October 22 US decline and cannot, by itself, explain that earlier fall.

INDmoney's analysis of SK hynix's recent stock fall explains the overlapping pressures before the results.

The earnings announcement brought a different reaction: Korea-listed SK hynix shares rose as much as 9.4% in morning trading on October 28. That was an intraday Korean-market gain, separate from the earlier US-session decline.

SK hynix Q3 2026 earnings: What drove the record profit?

The July-September results showed that demand and pricing remained strong inside the business. Revenue crossed ₩100 trillion for the first time, while operating profit grew faster than sales.

Operating profit beat expectations

Operating profit was 8.6% above the ₩76.7 trillion ($57.8 billion) analyst estimate. The operating margin reached about 80%. This means SK hynix earned roughly ₩80 in operating profit for every ₩100 in sales, before accounting for tax and non-operating gains or losses.

Why did net profit fall despite stronger operating earnings?

Net profit was higher than a year earlier but fell 58% from Q2. Foreign-exchange losses and declines in investment-asset values weighed on earnings, with net non-operating expenses reaching approximately ₩32.6 trillion ($24.6 billion). These expenses reduced the final profit even as the company earned more from its core business.

What drove the strong operating performance?

Higher memory prices and growing sales of products used in AI infrastructure supported earnings. Sales of DDR5 memory used in servers increased, HBM4 shipments picked up and higher-value storage products for data centres contributed to growth. High-bandwidth memory, or HBM, supplies data quickly to AI processors, including those made by Nvidia.

When selling prices rise faster than production costs, a memory manufacturer’s profit can grow much faster than its revenue. That helps explain SK hynix’s unusually high margin this quarter. Sustaining that profitability will depend on whether demand remains strong and limited supply continues to support prices.

SK hynix’s $75 billion shareholder return plan explained

SK hynix plans to share more of its earnings and investment gains with shareholders through cash dividends and share buybacks followed by cancellations. Shareholders will receive part of the returns as cash, while the company will use another part to buy and permanently cancel its shares.

What does the annual plan include?

SK hynix plans approximately ₩100 trillion ($75.4 billion) in total shareholder returns for fiscal 2026, through two routes:

How shareholders benefitPlanned amountWhat it means
Cash dividendsAt least ₩30 trillion ($22.6 billion)Cash paid directly to eligible shareholders
Share buybacks and cancellationsAt least ₩60 trillion ($45.2 billion)The company buys and permanently cancels shares, increasing each remaining share’s ownership stake

Where does August’s buyback fit? The ₩40 trillion ($30.2 billion) buyback announced in August is already included in the buyback amount above. It should not be added again to the annual total.

How much will shareholders receive as a Q3 dividend?

The board approved a Q3 cash dividend of approximately ₩14 trillion ($10.6 billion). This works out to ₩20,000 ($15.08) per ordinary share, split equally between two components:

Dividend componentAmount per ordinary shareReason for the payment
Earnings-related dividend₩10,000 ($7.54)Reflects improved business earnings
Special dividend₩10,000 ($7.54)Shares gains realised from the Kioxia investment
Total Q3 dividend₩20,000 ($15.08)Combined payment to eligible shareholders

The distinction matters for future payouts. The earnings-related portion reflects business performance, while the special dividend comes from investment gains. Investors should therefore avoid assuming that the same special payment will recur every year.

Why is SK hynix returning so much to shareholders?

SK hynix’s large payout reflects two sources of cash: stronger business performance and gains realised from its Kioxia investment. Improved cash generation gives the company more room to reward shareholders, while the investment gains provide an additional source for special dividends.

The size of the payout also reflects its shareholder return policy. SK hynix aims to return more than 50% of the cumulative free cash flow generated during 2025-2027. Free cash flow is the cash left after running the business and investing in factories and equipment. As this cash grows, the policy supports larger distributions to shareholders.

The company’s view of its share price helps explain why part of the return is through buybacks. In August, management said the stock did not fully reflect its business strength and cash-generating ability. Buying and cancelling shares allows it to reduce the share count at prices it considers undervalued, increasing each remaining share’s ownership stake.

Can SK hynix sustain its AI profits and shareholder payouts?

SK hynix has strong cash reserves and customer commitments to support its business, but repeating this year’s large payout will depend on future memory prices and expansion costs. The company needs to keep generating cash after funding new production capacity.

Long-term agreements with 14 major customers cover more than 50% of its production capacity for 2027 and 2028. This gives SK hynix a clearer view of future demand. However, contract prices can change with market conditions within agreed ranges, so these agreements do not guarantee today’s profit margins.

Newer products could also support earnings. Management expects HBM4, its next-generation AI memory, to overtake HBM3E in shipment volume and revenue in Q4 2026. It also expects memory demand to exceed supply through 2030. Both are company forecasts.

SK hynix has a large cash reserve to support its plans. At the end of Q3, it held net cash of $74.4 billion:

MetricAmount in wonApprox. US dollars
Cash and cash equivalents₩114.5 trillion$86.3 billion
Less: Borrowings₩15.8 trillion$11.9 billion
Net cash₩98.7 trillion$74.4 billion

This gives the company room to invest in production and reward shareholders. However, investment spending is expected to rise significantly in 2027. How much it can return beyond the announced payouts will depend on the cash left after funding that expansion.

Author’s take: Future payouts depend on the cash left after expansion

Our assessment is that SK hynix’s customer agreements and cash reserves strengthen its ability to fund growth and reward shareholders. The key test is whether strong sales continue to generate enough cash after the company pays for additional factories and equipment.

If contracted orders turn into profitable deliveries and memory prices remain supportive, future dividends and buybacks will have a stronger foundation. If prices weaken while investment spending rises, shareholder returns could fall even if sales remain healthy. This year’s payout also includes Kioxia investment gains, which investors should not assume will recur annually.

For investors following SK hynix stock, the next results should therefore be judged on profit margins, cash generation and expansion spending together. Those measures will help show how much of today’s earnings strength can translate into lasting shareholder rewards.
