Novo Nordisk’s weight-loss pill is giving its business a lift. Stronger-than-expected sales helped the company raise its annual forecast, sending shares up about 5% in early Copenhagen trading on November 4, 2026.

The pill’s growth is helping offset weaker sales of Wegovy injections. Novo also announced that its long-serving CFO will leave at year-end. Can the pill’s momentum turn this encouraging quarter into a lasting recovery?

Why are Novo Nordisk shares rising today?

Novo delivered better quarterly sales and operating profit than analysts expected, then raised its forecast for the full year. Investors received evidence of stronger performance now and a more encouraging view of the months ahead.

Sales are the money Novo earns from selling its products. Operating profit is what remains after costs such as manufacturing, selling medicines and research, before financing costs and tax. “Adjusted” operating profit removes certain large, unusual charges specified by the company.

The results were roughly 8% above sales expectations and 12% above adjusted operating-profit expectations. This helps explain the positive reaction: the business performed better than the market had prepared for.

Why is the Wegovy pill attracting so much attention?

Wegovy is Novo Nordisk’s prescription medicine for weight management. Its active ingredient, semaglutide, mimics a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite. By reducing hunger and helping people eat fewer calories, it supports weight loss alongside a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity.

The pill is approved in the US for adults with obesity and have at least one weight-related health condition. It contains the same active ingredient as injectable Wegovy, but offers a different way to receive treatment: a daily tablet instead of a weekly injection.

Why could a pill bring more people into treatment?

An oral option may appeal to people who are reluctant to use injections. That gives Novo an opportunity to reach additional patients, rather than relying entirely on growth from its injectable products.

The distinction is commercially important. If existing Wegovy users simply switch from injections to tablets, pill sales could rise without adding much to the company’s overall revenue. The larger opportunity is to attract people who would otherwise remain untreated. Novo has reported uptake among patients who had not previously used GLP-1 medicines.

A tablet does not automatically make treatment easier for everyone, however. The pill requires daily use and specific fasting instructions, while the injection is taken weekly. Patient preferences and their ability to continue treatment will influence demand for each format.

What do the latest sales reveal?

Wegovy pill sales reached DKK 5.39 billion in July-September 2026, exceeding the DKK 4.62 billion analyst forecast. Sales increased 53% from the previous quarter, and the pill had reached eight markets by the results announcement.

More importantly, US injectable Wegovy sales fell 13%, while combined sales of Wegovy pills and injections increased 21%, excluding currency movements.

Together, these figures show why the pill matters: it generated enough revenue to outweigh the decline in US injectable sales. This supports the argument that the new format is strengthening the wider Wegovy business, although it does not establish how much growth came from new patients versus existing users switching treatments.

There is also a reason to temper expectations. Management said the pill’s prescription trend had flattened in recent weeks, attributing this to seasonality. The quarter demonstrates strong early commercial demand; it does not yet establish that the same pace of growth will continue.

How much better is Novo Nordisk’s annual outlook?

The updated forecast leaves room for modest growth, whereas the earlier forecast ranged from a decline to no growth. That reduces the scale of weakness management expects this year.

The middle of the sales and profit ranges has moved from a 3% decline to no growth. The improvement is significant, but the forecast still centres on stabilisation.

Free cash flow is the cash left from running the business after spending on assets such as factories and equipment. The higher forecast gives Novo more financial flexibility, although some of the improvement reflects lower investment spending and changes in the timing of cash collections and payments.

Investors should therefore read the cash-flow and sales forecasts together. Spending less can improve cash flow even when the underlying business is growing slowly.

Why did reported profit fall if the business update was encouraging?

Novo’s reported profit fell because it reduced the recorded value of certain drug-development and manufacturing assets. Its adjusted profit excludes these charges, which explains why the two profit measures moved in opposite directions.

In Q3 2026, reported operating profit fell 3% to DKK 23.01 billion, while adjusted operating profit increased 34% to DKK 31.72 billion. Both growth rates are measured in Danish kroner.

What reduced reported profit?

Novo recorded approximately DKK 8.7 billion in asset write-downs, comprising:

  • DKK 4.6 billion linked to ziltivekimab, a drug-development programme.
  • DKK 4.1 billion linked to its manufacturing network, as the company adjusted its production facilities to its needs.

A write-down means the company now considers an investment worth less than the value recorded in its accounts. The reduction counts as an expense and lowers profit, even though it does not require an equivalent cash payment that quarter.

Novo added these charges back when calculating adjusted operating profit. That helps investors examine performance without the asset-value reductions. However, the write-downs still matter: they show that some earlier investments are no longer expected to deliver their previously assessed value.

Why did adjusted profit grow so strongly?

Stronger medicine sales, cost savings and productivity improvements helped, but the comparison with last year also made growth look stronger. Novo recorded roughly DKK 9 billion of restructuring costs in Q3 2025, leaving a lower profit figure to grow from.

Think of a business that incurred a large reorganisation bill last year. Once that expense falls away, profit can rise even without an equally large increase in sales. Novo’s adjusted profit growth therefore reflects both improvements in the business and comparison with an unusually costly earlier quarter.

What leadership change accompanied Novo Nordisk’s share-price rally?

Alongside the results that lifted its shares, Novo announced a change in its finance leadership. CFO Karsten Munk Knudsen will leave at the end of December 2026, following a mutual agreement to pursue other opportunities. He has spent 27 years at Novo and served as CFO since February 2018.

His successor, Luigi La Corte, currently CFO of Galderma, brings more than 30 years of international financial leadership experience. His background includes serving as CFO of pharmaceutical company Recordati and senior finance roles at GSK and AstraZeneca.

What other developments are shaping Novo Nordisk’s next phase?

Competition, planned US price cuts and a potential new medicine will shape Novo’s business beyond the latest quarter. Each affects a different part of the recovery: retaining customers, earning revenue from treatments and developing future products.

How is competition putting pressure on Novo?

Novo faces competition from Eli Lilly, alongside the loss of patent exclusivity for semaglutide in some international markets. Patent expiry allows other manufacturers to introduce competing versions, subject to regulatory approval.

The effect is already visible in Canada: Novo reported lower prices following the loss of semaglutide exclusivity, even though its sales volumes remained broadly stable.

This illustrates an important distinction: demand can remain steady while revenue comes under pressure. Keeping patients on treatment does not necessarily preserve the amount the company earns from each prescription.

What will the planned US price cuts change?

Novo has announced that monthly US list prices for Wegovy and Ozempic will fall to $675 from January 1, 2027. That represents reductions of approximately 50% for Wegovy and 35% for Ozempic. The company says the change will affect cash flow in 2027.

The cuts could reduce costs for patients whose insurance payments are linked to list prices. However, list price is different from the revenue Novo receives after rebates and discounts. A 50% list-price reduction therefore does not automatically mean a 50% revenue decline.

Novo also says these changes will not alter its separate direct-to-patient self-pay prices.

Why does CagriSema matter beyond Wegovy?

CagriSema could give Novo another product to compete in weight management. The investigational weekly injection combines semaglutide with a second medicine, cagrilintide, rather than using semaglutide alone.

Novo expects a US regulatory decision in Q4 2026 and is preparing for a possible launch in early 2027, subject to approval.

For the business, approval would open another commercial opportunity. Its financial contribution would then depend on the approved uses, insurance coverage, pricing and patient uptake. Launch preparations also require spending before the product begins generating revenue, so regulatory progress and commercial success remain separate milestones.

Author’s take: What should investors check next?

Before changing expectations for Novo Nordisk, turn the recovery story into a few comparisons you can update when new results arrive.

Start with total Wegovy sales, adding pills and injections together. This shows whether the new product is expanding the business enough to compensate for weakness elsewhere.

Next, compare prescription trends with sales. If prescriptions rise but revenue barely changes, look for pricing or discount pressure. If both weaken, demand deserves closer examination.

Finally, track cash flow alongside spending plans as the incoming CFO takes over. Ask whether better cash generation comes from stronger operations, reduced investment or temporary changes in payment timing.

For CagriSema, follow the regulatory decision before assuming a launch date or future revenue. Together, these checks help identify whether Novo is building a durable recovery or still relying on a few encouraging developments.
