The latest chapter in the rivalry between Elon Musk and Sam Altman unfolded on August 12 and the battleground this time is Apple’s App Store. As Musk’s AI startup xAI pushes Grok to compete with ChatGPT, he has accused Apple of favoring OpenAI unfairly and has threatened to sue the iPhone maker. OpenAI founder Altman hit back, accusing Musk of questionable business practices.

Here’s a deep dive into the Elon Musk-Apple-Sam Altman controversy, with perspectives from both sides and implications for consumers, developers, and the future of artificial intelligence.

Elon Musk’s Claim: Apple Undermining Fair AI Competition

Elon Musk posted on X that his venture xAI is gearing up to sue Apple, accusing the tech giant of violating antitrust law. He bluntly charged that Apple is purposefully ensuring that only OpenAI’s ChatGPT can secure the #1 spot in its App Store rankings, effectively shutting out competitors like Grok or even Musk’s own platform, X, despite their popularity. In his words, “xAI will take immediate legal action.”

He amplified the jab by questioning why neither X nor Grok ever appear in Apple’s coveted “Must-Have” section, though Grok recently climbed to the #5 overall ranking for free apps, while ChatGPT still dominates. Musk accused Apple of stuffing the scale in favor of OpenAI, an “unequivocal antitrust violation.”

Sam Altman Hits Back at Musk: "Look in the Mirror"

Sam Altman hit back promptly, accusing Musk of hypocrisy. He cited reports that Musk has used X’s algorithm to promote his own posts and business interests, which he said was the same kind of favoritism Musk is now criticizing Apple for.

“This is a remarkable claim,” Altman wrote on X, alluding to allegations that Musk manipulates X “to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors.” Altman also suggested that a legal dispute could lead to “counter-discovery,” potentially exposing Musk’s internal practices.

Altman ended the jab with glorification of ChatGPT parent as he wrote, “OpenAI will just stay focused on making great products.”

Apple, Antitrust, and AI Domination

This exchange lands amid intensifying regulatory scrutiny of Apple’s App Store practices. In April alone, the EU fined Apple $580 (€500) million for violations of the Digital Markets Act, while in the U.S., a federal judge found Apple in contempt for ignoring earlier rulings, escalating pressure on its app-platform dominance.

The spotlight isn’t just on Apple.Musk and Altman have long competed for influence over the future of AI. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but left its board in 2018, later started xAI and has repeatedly clashed with OpenAI over strategy and philosophy. In 2024, he sued the organization, withdrew the case, and then filed it again.

What This Means for Grok, ChatGPT, Other AI Users, Developers?

  • App Access: Apple’s choices on who gets to be on top, who doesn’t shape the visibility and distribution of AI tools. If Musk’s claims are accurate, Apple could be tilting towards ChatGPT and OpenAI.
  • Tech Competition: If Musk follows through with litigation, this may open a window into Apple’s ranking algorithms and possibly lead to industry-wide changes.
  • Platform Accountability: Sam Altman’s response draws attention to how Musk himself steers his platform. If Musk’s past behavior on X qualifies as unfair manipulation, the broader question becomes: what constitutes fair promotion, and how do we demand accountability?
  • Ethics & PR Strategy in Tech: This saga shows how public threats, legal or otherwise, can be of dual-purpose: they highlight genuine concerns while also serving as powerful PR strategies.

Apple-OpenAI-xAI Showdown: Power, Perception, and Product

On the surface, this public showdown between Musk and Altman may seem like a spat between two tech billionaires, but it is more than that. This is a high-stakes contest over who controls AI narratives and distribution through algorithms, editorial curation, or courtroom strategies.

Whether Elon Musk’s legal threat for Apple materializes or not, it raises important questions: Who gets to be on top? How transparent should platforms like App Store be about their curation? And when tech leaders call out industry bias, are they pointing outward or inward?

There’s time yet to see if xAI files its lawsuit, whether Apple responds substantively, or regulators step in. But one thing is clear, the AI battle is heating up and here, influence is as much about perception as it is about innovation.
