Why put another mutual fund around a silver ETF? A fund of funds offers the familiar mutual-fund route, including SIPs, without requiring investors to place exchange orders themselves.
quant Silver ETF FOF offers that route through quant Silver ETF. Its NFO opened on 4 November and is scheduled to close on 6 November 2026. It changes the investment wrapper, while leaving investors exposed to the same volatile underlying metal. The convenience therefore needs to be assessed alongside costs.
How Does quant Silver ETF FoF Get Exposure to Silver?
An exchange-traded fund, or ETF, has units that trade on a stock exchange. This FoF buys quant Silver ETF units on investors’ behalf.
| Essential detail | Launch terms |
| AMC and structure | quant Money Managers Limited; open-ended FoF |
| Main investment | 95%–100% in quant Silver ETF |
| Liquidity allocation | 0%–5% in permitted debt, cash and money-market holdings |
| Benchmark | Domestic Price of Physical Silver |
| Minimum initial purchase / monthly SIP | ₹5,000 / ₹1,000 |
| Managers | Sameer Kate, Sanjeev Sharma and Yug Tibrewal |
| Plans | Direct and Regular; Growth and IDCW options |
| Riskometer | Very High |
| Exit load | 1% on redemptions or switch-outs within 15 days of allotment |
| Reopening | Within five business days of NFO allotment |
The FoF obtains silver exposure through the designated ETF while handling subscriptions, redemptions and liquidity. It does not select silver-mining stocks.
What Changes When You Choose the FoF Instead of the ETF?
| Feature | Silver ETF bought on an exchange | Silver ETF FoF |
| Account route | Demat and trading account for retail exchange transactions | Mutual-fund folio; demat not required |
| Transaction price | Exchange price, which can differ from NAV | Applicable mutual-fund NAV under cut-off and funds-realisation rules |
| Regular investing | Broker-supported recurring purchases may be available | AMC SIP facility |
| Costs to assess | ETF expenses, spread and applicable trading charges | FoF expenses plus embedded underlying ETF expenses |
The FoF handles exchange orders, but underlying trading costs remain. Its redemptions also require processing time.
Do Two Fund Layers Affect Returns?
Yes. The underlying ETF deducts its expenses before calculating NAV. The FoF then has its own expenses and may keep some money in liquid instruments. Both can create a gap between the investor’s return and the movement in silver prices.
Direct and Regular plans have different expense structures, but neither removes the underlying ETF’s costs. A verified live plan-wise TER was not established from the launch disclosures; their expense estimates and regulatory limits must not be presented as the final ongoing fee.
Tracking difference describes the return gap over a period. Tracking error describes how consistently or inconsistently returns follow the benchmark. A small, steady shortfall can coexist with low tracking error, so checking only that statistic misses the effect of costs.
Why Can Silver Prices Move So Sharply?
Silver combines precious-metal investment demand with industrial uses, including electronics and solar equipment. Strong industrial activity can support demand, while weaker production expectations can work in the opposite direction. Investment flows can amplify moves independently of near-term factory demand.
Indian investors also face the effects of international silver prices, exchange rates, import duties and local market conditions. A weaker rupee can support domestic prices even when international prices are unchanged; a stronger rupee can have the reverse effect. These influences do not always offset one another.
Silver generates no company earnings or bond interest. Returns depend principally on price changes after costs. The Very High Risk label is therefore more useful than assuming that a precious metal must be a stable investment.
What Alternatives and Tax Rules Should Investors Compare?
The most direct alternative is buying quant Silver ETF itself through the exchange. HDFC Silver ETF Fund of Fund and Nippon India Silver ETF Fund of Fund provide existing FoF alternatives using their respective ETFs. Compare the same plan type, combined expenses, tracking difference and redemption terms. Their performance histories belong to those funds, not this NFO.
For resident individuals investing under current rules, an unlisted silver FoF outside the specified-debt-fund rules generally qualifies for 12.5% long-term capital-gains tax after more than 24 months, without indexation. Shorter holdings attract applicable slab rates. Listed silver ETF units generally use a more-than-12-month long-term threshold. Surcharge and cess are additional; each SIP instalment has its own holding period.
The final check is the amount of metal exposure already held across gold, silver and multi-asset funds. This FoF’s convenience does not justify an oversized allocation. Its ₹10 initial NAV is a starting denomination, not discounted silver, and the new FoF has no established return or tracking record at launch.
