Tata Steel Nederland Launches Major Revamp to Boost Efficiency and Profitability

Tata Steel Nederland (TSN) has announced a comprehensive transformation strategy aimed at turning its Netherlands operations into one of the most efficient and cost-effective steel production plants in Europe. As part of this initiative, the company is targeting annual cost savings of €500 million starting from the second half of FY26, which is expected to increase to over €550 million in FY27. Brokerage firm Investec estimates that this would translate into a significant cost reduction of approximately $78–86 per tonne of steel produced by TSN. The savings are expected to come through multiple avenues, including a planned reduction of around 1,600 jobs from its existing workforce of 12,000. Additionally, the company will focus on increasing output, optimising its product mix, improving the efficiency of its blast furnaces, and ramping up both the production and usage of pellets. has maintained that the recent imposition of tariffs by the United States is likely to have a minimal direct impact on its operations. Meanwhile, its UK arm—Tata Steel UK (TSUK)—is projected to achieve cash breakeven by the second quarter of FY26, signalling a turnaround in its financial performance. Brokerage houses have reacted positively to these developments, with Philip Capital reiterating a buy call on Tata Steel, with a share price target of ₹173, pointing to the potential benefits of the ongoing transformation at TSN. Equirus Securities has maintained a long rating, setting a target price of ₹150 and foresees an improvement in profitability in the European business over the next two years. Investec has upgraded its rating on the stock from sell to hold, citing stronger operational visibility at TSN. The brokerage has also revised its EBITDA per tonne forecast for TSN to $100/t by FY27, up from its earlier projection of $60/t. Previously, TSN was expected to generate EBITDA of $40/t in FY26. However, with the new efficiency measures in place, EBITDA per tonne is now projected to rise by $80/t in FY26, followed by an additional increase of $7–8/t in FY27, significantly improving the profitability outlook. Yet another positive development, according to Investec, is the reduced dependence on fund transfers from Tata Steel India to support the European operations. This improvement in financial independence is expected to provide greater flexibility and stability for the group as a whole.16 Apr, 2025 09:06 PM

Tata Steel and Global Partners Sign Green Hydrogen Deal

Major industrial groups from Oman, the Netherlands and Germany have signed an agreement for the development of the worlds first liquid hydrogen import corridor, Tata Steel Nederland said on Wednesday. The corridor will link the port of Duqm in Oman, the port of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and key logistics hubs in Germany, including the port of Duisburg, the Dutch arm of the Indian steel maker said in a statement. It aims to enable the import of green hydrogen - produced using renewable energy - to Europe, it added. This partnership reflects Omans commitment to playing a leading role in the global green hydrogen economy, while strengthening ties with Europe to support its sustainable clean energy transition, Omans Minister of Energy and Minerals Salim Nasser Al Aufi said. Oman has been investing to support its decarbonization targets, with the aim of producing at least 1 million tons of renewable hydrogen a year by 2030, according to a report published by the IEA in 2023. The sultanate is on track to become the sixth-largest exporter of hydrogen globally, and the largest in the Middle East, by 2030, the report states. The agreement was signed by 11 parties during a visit by the Sultan of Oman to the Netherlands. It includes several infrastructure projects along the corridor, notably export and import facilities in the ports of Duqm, Amsterdam and Duisburg, as well as pipe and rail networks for the transport of gaseous and liquid hydrogen. Tata Steel has been in talks with the Dutch government for more than a year about subsidies for its plans to cut pollution at its large plant in IJmuiden, on the coast west of Amsterdam. Tata has promised to convert the steel mill, one of the largest polluters in the Netherlands, to a cleaner one powered by natural gas or hydrogen. In our role as a large potential buyer, we can contribute to the development of a sustainable economy based on green hydrogen in our region, said Hans van den Berg, CEO of Tata Steel Nederland.16 Apr, 2025 07:10 PM
