About Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is a government-owned company that makes and maintains fighter jets, helicopters, engines, and other aircraft systems. It mainly works for India’s armed forces, but also supports the space sector, civil aviation, and exports. HAL started in 1940 and is now one of India’s most important defence and aerospace companies.

Strong Business and Big Orders

As of March 2025, HAL had an order book worth ₹1.89 lakh crore. This means it has contracts in hand to deliver products and services in the coming years. Major orders include:

  • 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH Prachand) worth ₹62,777 crore
  • 240 Sukhoi-30 aircraft engines worth ₹25,500 crore
  • 12 Sukhoi-30MKI jets worth ₹13,454 crore

HAL also received ₹19,271 crore for repair and maintenance work and ₹3,180 crore for design and development projects.

In 2024-25, HAL earned ₹30,105 crore in revenue.

Where the Money Comes From

HAL earns most of its money (70 percent) by maintaining and upgrading aircraft for the military. Only 23 percent comes from making new aircraft, and the rest comes from exports and design work.
