Berger Paints News

Berger Paints Faces Competition in Indian Paint Industry

Berger Paints, a leading player in the Indian paint industry, faces increasing competition as it aims to maintain its position as the second-largest paint brand. With evolving market dynamics, changing consumer preferences, and emerging players, the companys ability to retain this ranking will depend on strategic initiatives, product innovation, and expanding its market reach in the coming years. During Tuesdays trading session, shares of Berger Paints India Ltd jumped to an intraday peak of Rs.507.60 each, reflecting a 2.8 percent increase from the prior closing price of Rs.502.65 per share. However, the stock retreated later and is currently trading at Rs.506.30 apiece. Over the past five years, the stock delivered over 35 percent returns. Berger Paints is optimistic about a stronger performance in Q4, projecting results that could surpass those of Q3. While the company has yet to pass on any reductions in crude prices to consumers, it remains confident in its business outlook. In a recent interview with CNBC TV18, Berger Paints CEO Mr. Abhijit Roy stated that the anticipated opening of a Birla Opus factory in eastern India is not expected to have any significant impact on the companys operations. The company believes its market position and brand strength will shield it from competition in the region. Currently, Berger Paints is operating at a capacity utilization rate of 65-70 percent, which the company aims to improve in the coming quarters. The financial impact of the duty cut losses has already been accounted for in Q2 and Q3, and the business is expected to stabilize in Q4. The entry of Birla Opus into the eastern market, while notable, does not seem to pose an immediate threat, as Berger Paints continues to focus on maintaining its leadership in the Indian paint industry through strategic initiatives and strong customer relationships. The Decorative segment saw a high single-digit volume growth, with a sequential increase in both volume and value. The Protective business also delivered a strong performance during the quarter. The company continued to gain market share in Q3, with its current market share exceeding 20 percent. Operating margins stayed within the guided range and improved sequentially. Additionally, the company enhanced its net cash position by the end of the quarter. According to its recent financial updates, Berger Paints India Ltd reported consolidated revenue of Rs.2,975 crores in Q3 FY25, marking a 3.3 percent increase from Rs.2,882 crores in Q3 FY24. However, the company saw a 1.3 percent decline in net profit to Rs.296.00 crores, compared to Rs.300.00 crores in the same period. The company has a Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) of 24.5 percent and a Return on Equity (ROE) of 20.48 percent. Its Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio stands at 51.43, higher than the industry average of 43.08. Furthermore, the company maintains a current ratio of 2.08, a debt-to-equity ratio of 0.14, and an Earnings Per Share (EPS) of Rs.9.78.18 Mar, 2025 04:49 PM

Berger Paints Expects Steady Demand and Margin Expansion in Q4FY25

Berger Paints India expects high single-digit volume growth and mid-single-digit value growth in January-March 2025 quarter (Q4FY25). Abhijit Roy, MD and CEO of Berger Paints said, We had indicated that quarter three was better than quarter two, and quarter four is likely to be slightly better than quarter three. The gap which was there earlier, was almost 6% that gap will get narrowed to about 3% from the volume and the value. While demand remains moderate, it has shown a clear improvement compared to the previous quarter, leading to a slight increase in value growth. The company expects a slight improvement in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) margins from the 15.9% recorded in October-December 2024 quarter (Q3FY25). Roy explained that the benefits from lower raw material costs, driven by declining oil prices, take time to reflect in margins. While some materials experience immediate cost reductions, most adjustments happen gradually. As a result, the company has not passed on these savings yet and expects to retain some margin gains in the current quarter. Berger Paints does not view Birla Opus Paints, a subsidiary of Grasim Industries, as a major competitive threat despite its new plant in the East. Roy said, We are strong, and we are there in this place for a long time. We have our own strengths, in terms of brand equity, in terms of distribution network, in terms of our relationship with painters, applicators, builders, architects. So that will hold true. I dont see that changing in any significant way, just because the factory is going to be built. Despite facing two key challenges this year—a 5% price drop and increased competition from a new entrant—the company has continued to grow. With the pricing impact expected to subside and competitive pressure likely to be less intense than this year, the company expects sustaining its growth momentum. Berger Paints evaluated Akzo Nobel Indias assets but found the valuation too high and decided to opt out. However, the company remains open to reconsidering if a suitable opportunity arises in the future. Berger Paints current market capitalisation is ₹58,411 crore. The stock is currently trading at ₹504.70 as of 11:06 am on the NSE and has declined 9% over the last year.18 Mar, 2025 12:27 PM
