Nifty Expiry: Expiry date for options contract for Nifty Bank and Nifty Mid-cap Select Changed!

Nifty options expiry date change

The expiry day in derivative markets represents the final day on which derivative contracts, such as options or futures, remain valid. Prior to the expiration, option holders have several options available to them: they can exercise the option, close their position, or simply allow the contract to expire without any value.

For example, An investor purchases a weekly Nifty option contract expiring on 20th July 2023. The investor has to exercise or exit the option on or before the expiry date,i.e. 20th July 2023.

The following changes have been made to the expiry days by NSE:

Changes in Nifty Midcap Select (MIDCPNIFTY) expiration date

National Stock Exchange announced a change in expiry day of Nifty Midcap Select (MIDCPNIFTY) weekly and monthly contracts from Wednesday to Monday. The change will come into effect on  August 21, 2023. This means that if the contract of MIDCPNIFTY was supposed to expire on Wednesday, 23 August 2023 it will now expire on Monday 21 August 2023.

Changes in Nifty bank (BANKNIFTY) expiration date

National Stock Exchange also announced a change in expiry date of Nifty bank (BANKNIFTY) weekly contracts from Thursday to Wednesday excluding the expiry week of monthly contract. The change will come into effect on Wednesday 6th September 2023. This means that if the weekly contract was to expire on Thursday 7th September 2023, it will now expire on Wednesday 6th September 2023. There will be no changes in the expiry day for BANKNIFTY monthly and quarterly contracts.

There will be no change in the trading cycle- which is 4 weekly expiration contracts (excluding monthly contracts), 3 monthly expiration contracts and 3 quarterly expiries (March, June, Sept & Dec cycle). 

Earlier on Jun 6, 2023 NSE announced a change in BANKNIFTY expiry from Thursdays to Fridays. The latest announcement comes as a result of BSE relaunching SENSEX and BANKEX derivatives which expire on Fridays. 

This now means that the traders will face expiry days everyday of the week.
