About Bihar Sponge Iron Ltd

Bihar Sponge Iron, incorporated in Patna on 16 April 1982, is a joint Indo-German venture between Modi Industries, Modi Rubber, and their associates along with the Bihar State Industrial Development Corporation and Germany's Lurgi. The company produces sponge iron from iron ore, with a total installed capacity of 150,000 tonnes per annum. It has a technical collaboration with Lurgi Germany for technical know-how. Recently, the company came out with a rights issue. Over the last four financial years, their net worth has eroded more than 50%, leading them to be classified as sick and being referred to BIFR. IFCI has been appointed as an operating agency for preparing a rehabilitation scheme, and they are setting up a captive power generating unit to utilise coal fines from the production process. The commissioning date was changed from April 2001 to March 2002, and they have also commissioned a 5 MW captive power plant since 2002.
