Company Information

PayPal Holdings, Inc., founded in December 1998, is a technology platform and digital payments company. PayPal, founded by Max Levchin, Luke Nosek, Peter Thiel, and Ken Howery, originally started as Confinity and developed security software for handheld devices. Confinity transitioned into a money transfer service in 1999 and merged with an online financial services company X.com founded by Elon Musk in 2000. It retained the name X.com initially and was renamed PayPal when it came out with an Initial Public Offer (IPO) in 2002. The IPO at $ 13 per share generated $ 61 million. PayPal soon gained popularity as an online payments platform; eBay acquired it for $ 1.5 billion the same year. Its shares were valued at $ 23 per share. Paypal became the official payments transfer service for eBay. The company entered into a partnership with the Discover Card network in 2012 to allow its customers an opportunity to use PayPal in physical stores. PayPal customers could make PayPal payments in any of the seven million stores that support the network. eBay decided to spin-off PayPal into a separate entity on September 30, 2014. PayPal began trading as an independent entity on NASDAQ (PYPL). Dan Schulman was appointed the president and the CEO, while the former eBay CEO John Donahoe became the chairman. Paypal Holdings Inc., has its headquarters in San Jose, CA. PayPal, PayPal Credit, Braintree, Venmo, Xoom, iZettle, Hyperwallet, and Paydiant are the various solutions offered by the company. The firm facilitates payment transactions between merchants and consumers globally. Customers can use the account for payment of goods and services and transfer and withdraw funds too. Consumers can transact with merchants using funding sources such as bank account, credit and debit card, PayPal account balance, PayPal credit account, or other stored value products using the digital platform. The firm also offers consumers person-to-person payment solutions through its PayPal website and mobile application, Venmo, and Xoom. PayPal has made several acquisitions over the years adding new customers and enhancing its technological competence. It acquired Verisign in 2005 for $ 370 million and Fraud Sciences in January 2008 for $ 169 million. They purchased Bill Me Later, rebranded as PayPal Credit for $ 945 million in October 2008. PayPal currently has 325 million active account holders and is available in more than 200 markets. The PayPal platform allows its users to receive money in more than 100 currencies, withdraw funds in 56 currencies and hold balances in 25 currencies.
