It is an American multinational investment bank and financial services company headquartered in New York City. It was formed in 1998 via a merger between Travelers Group (a financial group) and Citicorp, a banking giant. Today, Citicorp owns Citigroup Inc. after having spun off Travelers in 2002. Citigroup Inc.’s business segments include Institutional Clients Group (ICG), Global Consumer Banking (GCB), and Corporate. Alongside JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo, it forms the backbone of the American banking landscape and is considered too big to fail. As of 2021, Citigroup ranks 33 on Fortune 500 companies and houses over 2,00,000 employees. As for services, Citigroup Inc.’s ICG segment caters primarily to high-net-worth, public sector, corporate, and institutional clients, offering a myriad of banking, markets, investment, and other financial services. Its GCB segment houses a global, full-service consumer franchise operating via local branches, e-delivery, and offices and specialises in a plethora of banking, lending, investment, and credit card services.
