About Saurashtra Cement Ltd

Saurashtra Cement Limited (SCL), established in 1956 to manufacture cement using the semi dry process, has become a successful venture for the Mehta Group, headed by Nanji Kalidas Mehta, after their investment of 50 lacs in 1960. It is located in Ranavav, Gujarat and currently has a market share of 23%. In 1993, they issued rights shares and PCDs to increase their capacity from 8.63 lakh tons to 11.29 lakh tons. They market cement under the brand name "Hathi", and have a technical collaboration with Fuller USA for design plant equipment. SCL was awarded the Excellence Award for productivity, quality, innovation, and management by the Institute of Economic Studies, New Delhi in 1992. Additionally, they are also the largest exporter of cement clinker to West Asia with a market share of 33%. They are in the process of expanding their capacity to 2.4 million tons and building a captive Jetty at Porbandar, Gujarat at a cost of 250 crores. The project is estimated to be completed in 200304.
