About Novartis India Ltd

Novartis India Limited (NIL) is a subsidiary of the world's second-largest pharmaceutical company, Swiss giant Novartis. Incorporated in 1947, the company has four core segments- Pharmaceuticals, Generics, Over the Counter, and Animal Health. Its history traces back to the middle of the 18th century when Geigy was founded, followed by Ciba in 1860 and then Sandoz in 1886. It was only in 1996 when the three separate entities merged to become Novartis. In 2000, the company acquired products from SmithKline Beecham and started a Joint Effort to Eradicate Tuberculosis (JEET) in India. The Glivec drug was launched in India in 2002 for which they were awarded TERI's Corporate Social Responsibility award. Over the years the company has alligned with various global organisations inlcuding the WHO to help stem the spread of malaria, as well as launching numerous initiatives including the Arogya Parivar in 2008 to target healthcare needs of villagers. Moreover, between 2000 and 2006, it spent over USD 755 million on research for neglected diseases and patient-access programs.
