Company Information

Ciena is an American-based telecommunication networking equipment company. Currently headquartered in Hanover, Maryland, USA, Ciena has been described as World's biggest player in Optical Connectivity by The Baltimore Sun. Key customers of Ciena include AT&T, Korea Telecom, Verizon Communications, Sprint Corporation, etc. Ciena was founded in 1992 by the electrical engineer David R. Huber under the name HydraLite. Since then, it expanded manifold, ranking 770 in 2017 and 774 in 2018 in the Fortune 1000 list. It partnered with Sify in 2018 to increase its Information and Communications Technology network capacity from 100G to 400G. Its converged packet optical products supported cloud computing, the Internet of Things, and extensive data analysis across 40 data centers of Sify in India. Talking about its Indian operations, Bharti Airtel used Ciena’s equipment in 2019 to build a photonic control plane network of 130,000 km for connecting 4000 locations in India. It also provides converged packet optical and Ethernet services to Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea Limited, the three pioneers of the Indian telecom industry. In fact, as per the BusinessToday report, Vodafone Idea has partnered with Ciena for its 5G rollout operations. Products and Services Ciena is primarily engaged in the telecommunication sector, and its products and services revolve around equipment, software, and services for this industry and cloud service firms. This includes: Network Infrastructure: It includes routing optical network switches to manage high loads of data on telecommunication networks. Apart from this, it provides equipment and technology for undersea cable networks. Software and Analytics: Telecom companies use Ciena's Blue Planet software platform for programming communications networks and network automation. To prevent disruptions and network outages, machine learning algorithms analyze the network's anomalies, predict the issues, and help identify actions for the network operators.
