Murudeshwar Ceramics MCL was founded in 1983 as a joint venture between R N Shetty and Associates and the KSIIDC. The company supplied a Rs 13.45 crore tech-knowhow project through Sacmi Imola SACMI, Italy. The original ceramic tile single-firing process started producing 12,500 tons per annum; this production capacity was later increased to 25,000 tons per annum with balancing equipment in 1989-1990. MCL identified an opportunity in 199293 to expand capacity to 40,000 tons per annum, the cost of the project was Rs 41.85cr and was financed from a rights issue of equity capital and partly convertible debentures, ICICI loan and a state subsidy of Rs 20 lakh. The project included vitrified tile production and the creation of a facility to process granite slabs. There was a delay in completion of the project due to a fire damaging the control panel and by the late delivery of a polishing line. In response, the company invested internal accruals to cover the additional cost and the project finally went into commercial production in 1995. Following this success, MCL planned an expansion of the ceramic tile manufacturing capacity from 75,000 tons to 100,000 tons per annum, at a cost of Rs.66 Crores. This was to be financed from an internal loan component of Rs.50 Crores.
