Snowflake Inc., was set up in the year 2012 as a cloud computing company that operates in the space of data warehousing. It was established by 3 warehousing experts Thierry Cruanes, Benoit Dageville along with Marcin Żukowski and is based at present in Bozeman, Montana. 

The company’s name is an ode to the founders’ preference for winter sports. The company provides data warehouse-as-a-service, which is a cloud-based analytics and data storage solution. Cloud-based technology and software enable commercial subscribers to analyse and store data. It works on Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure and Google cloud platforms. By developing and improving a cloud-based platform, the business is known for reviving the industry for the data warehouse.

In 2015, the company launched its first product, a cloud-based database warehouse for the people. In 2018, the company became a unicorn by raising 263 million USD during a round of financing at a valuation of 1.5 billion USD. It subsequently raised 450 million USD from Sequoia Capital by increasing its overall valuation to 3.5 billion USD. 

In 2019, the company floated Snowflake Data Exchange. After being ranked as one of the US’s top start-ups and subsequently raising 479 million USD, the company went public to raise 3.4 billion USD with the largest ever software-related IPO. It was also the largest IPO to date which ended up doubling its value on the very first day of free trading. 

The company has over 3500 active customers and announced in May 2021 that it operates without any headquarters with only a principal office for executives in Bozeman, Montana. The revenue for FY21 stands at 592 million USD and 93% of it is consumption-based. The company is valued at 14 billion USD, and the cloud data platform industry size is pegged at 90 billion USD.
