About Soma Textiles & Industries Ltd

Soma Textiles Industries' Ahmedabad unit was taken over in 1969 and underwent modernisation and expansion. In 1986, it became one of the first companies to manufacture Indigo Denim and in 1994, a 100-spindle export-oriented unit was commissioned with Rs 74 Cr. Their main products are cotton yarn and fabrics, as well as blended yarn and man-made fabrics. In 1995, 20 Ruti looms were replaced by 12 Sulzer 390 cm wide-width looms. To improve capacity utilisation, Sulzer wide-width looms and a Schlafhorst Rotor Spinning machine and other balancing machines were installed. This increased production of denim by 25%. The company plans to upgrade the quality of the yarn for export markets using control equipment and introduce stretch denim fabrics. Due to recession and high competition from unorganised sector, the company's profitability slumped in 1999-2000. To increase production, 20 Second hand Picanol Airjet looms were installed.
