About Polychem Ltd

Polychem, established in 1955, is a manufacturer producing a range of products from polystyrene, industrial alcohol, vinyl acetate monomer, and polyvinyl alcohol, to alcoholic beverages such as whisky, vodka, and brandy, and the brands Royal Secret, Alcazar, and Beehive. In late 1992 they issued rights of zero-interest FCDs to partially finance the expansion of their distillery, VAM, and PVA plant, and to cover working capital needs estimated at Rs 32 crore. They signed a collaboration agreement with International Distillers & Vintners (UK) to produce and market their brands, and also formed an alliance with Dow Chemical Company (US) to market their speciality grade polystyrene. Additionally, Polychem and AVX (US) promoted the new company Gujarat PolyAVX Electronics to manufacture chip multilayer ceramic capacitors. In 1999-2000, due to accumulated losses, Polychem referred to the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) under the Sick Industrial Companies Act (SICA), where IDBI was appointed the operating agency.
