About Andhra Cements Ltd

Andhra Cement Ltd, formerly known as Andhra Cement Company Ltd, was incorporated in 1936 and owned by the Sadu Jain group, producing and marketing cement under the name Durga Prasad. In 1940, the company’s first unit was established in Vijayawada. Over time, the capacity was extended in 3 stages and reached 2.4 lac tpa in 1987. The company obtained a letter of intent to produce 2.5 lac tpa of cement at Durga Cement Works in Nadikunde. An investment plan of Rs. 63 crs. including modernisation of the Vijayawada and Vizag units was financed in the form of term loans from financial institutions and banks. In 1994, BIFR approved the rehabilitation plan of Rs. 79.81 crore which involved the change in ownership of the company in favour of Duncan Goenka Group. In 2001, BIFR declared the scheme as failed and IDBI appointed as the Operating Agency. Cement production in the year 1997-98 was 6.58 lac MT as compared to 6.28 lac MT in the previous year and it was also certified with ISO 9002 in 2000. IDBI was asked to invite offers for takeover/leasing/amalgamation/merger of the company for its rehabilitation with or without one-time settlement of the dues of FIs and banks as per the SICA Special Provision 1985.
