The US Trading Hours For NASDAQ and NYSE

There is a reason why people call NYC - the city that never sleeps. The reason is quite simple: it houses two of the major stock exchanges of the world - NYSE or New York Stock Exchange, owned by Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), listed on the NYSE and situated in the famous Wall Street, and NASDAQ, owned by Nasdaq Inc. and situated at One Liberty Plaza.

The NYSE was set up in 1792 and is the largest stock exchange in terms of market capitalization, whereas NASDAQ was set up in 1971 and has become the second-largest stock exchange in the world. The following table will give insights into the US stock market timings in India:

An Overview on EST and EDT

Two of the leading stock markets in the United States, the NYSE and the NASDAQ, use the Eastern Time Zone, or ET, to determine their opening hours for trading. In the above table, we have already converted the timings in IST for a better understanding of the US market opening time in India. However, there are two commonly used variables in this particular time zone:

                1. Eastern Standard Time, or EST: The EST variable is generally observed during the autumn and the winter months all over the United States. EDT runs 4 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time or UTC - 4; hence, it is 9.5 hours behind IST.
                2. Eastern Daylight Time, or EDT: The EDT is observed during the summer and spring seasons. EST lags by 5 hours when compared to Greenwich Mean Time or UTC - 5, and 10.5 hours behind IST.
Despite many provisions for early trading, the NASDAQ and the NYSE begin trading during the start of normal business hours, i.e., 9:30 AM on weekdays, and there is no provision for trading on weekends.
