AstraZeneca plc is an English pharmaceutical company located in Cambridge. It is a multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology firm based in the United Kingdom and Sweden. The company operates in over 100 countries and caters to the requirements of millions of people globally. Among the significant ailments covered by the company's product range are oncology, gastrointestinal, infectious, respiratory, and inflammatory disorders. Astra AB and Zeneca Group Plc amalgamated to establish AstraZeneca in 1999. Astra AB was founded in 1913 by 400 Swedish doctors. Zeneca Group PLC was created in 1993 when the British chemicals business ICI (formed by the amalgamation of four British chemical companies) demerged its medicines, agrochemicals, and specialist divisions to become Zeneca Group PLC. The merger is one of the world's largest pharmaceutical businesses, having purchased several corporations, including Cambridge Antibody Technology (in 2006), MedImmune (in 2007), Spirogen (in 2013), and Definiens (by MedImmune in 2014). The organisation undertakes research and development in three strategic locations: England, Sweden, and Maryland, United States. The Oxford–AstraZeneca vaccine was approved for use in India in January 2021, paving the way for a large-scale vaccination campaign in the world's second-most populous country. The Serum Institute of India later stated that the Oxford–AstraZeneca shot would be manufactured locally under the brand name COVISHIELD.
