Advanced Micro Devices, more popularly known as AMD, is a company engaged in manufacturing semiconductor devices used in computer processing. Apart from the semiconductor devices, AMD manufactures flash memory, microprocessor and motherboard. Currently, AMD is operational in 39 office locations spread over 24 countries. The founder of AMD is Walter Jeremiah (Jerry) Sanders. The company was founded on May 1, 1969. The headquarters of AMD is located in Sunnyvale, California. The production of the company commenced in 1970. The product was called AM9300. It was a 4-bit MSI shift register. The first proprietary product called AM2501 logic counter was also rolled out in 1970. By 1975, AMD had a range of 212 products; 49 of them were proprietary. The company went public in September 1972. In 1975, AMD entered the microprocessor market with AM9080 and AM2900. In 1977, AMD formed a joint venture company with Siemens. The company was called Advanced Micro Computers (AMC). The company had offices in Germany and Silicon Valley. This helped the entry of AMD into microcomputer development and manufacturing. In 1982, AMD started producing 8086, 8088, 80186 and 80188 processors for IBM personal computers. AMD agreed with Intel to supply microprocessors for IBM and IBM clone computers. In 1985, AMD entered the list of Fortune 500 companies. On July 24, 2006, AMD acquired ATI Technologies. In October 2008, AMD announced that it would spin off its manufacturing unit under GlobalFoundries Inc. In 2021, AMD reported a revenue income of $16.4 billion, with a net income of $3.16 billion.
