Tesla's Growing EV Sales in China: Did the price slash bring the 9.3% growth?

Tesla's electric vehicle (EV) sales in China continued to grow in August, with the company delivering 84,159 China-made vehicles, up by 9.3% YoY (year-on-year). This brings Tesla's total EV sales in China for the first eight months of the year to 624,983, up by 56.3% YoY.

To pull up the sales, Tesla lowered its car prices in China to compete with local rival BYD and other companies. The prices of the Model Y were slashed and now Model Y Long Range starts at 299,900 yuan, which is 4.5% lower than before, and the Model Y Performance starts at 349,900 yuan, a 3.8% reduction. However, this strategy reduced its gross margin from selling cars from 27.8% to 17.9%.

  • The cost of EVs is coming down.
  • Consumers are becoming more aware of the environmental benefits of EVs.
