Leading airline company Indigo recently announced its results for the Jan - Mar ‘23 period. Amid continued turbulence in the Indian aviation industry, Indigo’s fortunes have been an exception. In the March quarter, revenues jumped while the company moved into profits compared to a loss in the previous year.

Decoding Indigo Q4 earnings

Indigo revenues:

  • The airline major reported revenues of Rs 14,160.6 crores for the Jan - Mar ‘23 period. This denotes a significant jump in revenues of 76.5% from the previous year.
     
  • Passenger ticket revenues came in at Rs 12,434.6 crores for the March quarter, up an impressive 80.6% from the previous year. This can be attributed to the rising demand for air travel in the company marked by increasing leisure and business travel after a lull due to the pandemic.
     
  • Ancillary revenues for the Jan - Mar ‘23 period came in at Rs 1,446 crores. This denotes a growth of 36.6% from the prior year.

Indigo operating margins: Indigo’s operating margins improved significantly to 20.9% from the previous year’s figure of 2.1%.

Moreover, operating profit jumped by a massive margin to Rs 2,967 crores from Rs 172 crores in the previous year.

Indigo passengers: Indigo’s passenger count for the Jan - Mar ‘23 period stood at 23.4 million. This denotes an increase of 60.5% from the previous year.

Indigo earnings: Other key operational metrics

  • Indigo’s average seat kilometers (ASK) improved by 49.2% from the previous year to 30.4 billion.
     
  • Another key metric where Indio witnessed growth is the Revenue passenger kilometers (RPK). The RPK for the March quarter came in at 25.6 billion, up 63.8% from the previous year.
     
  • Load factor jumped to 84.2% from 76.7% in the previous year.

Indigo dividend: Indigo did not declare any dividend in the current quarter.

Indigo net profits: Indigo reported net profits of Rs 919.2 crores in the Jan - Mar ‘23 period. This compares favorably to a loss of Rs 1,681.8 crores in the previous year.
