Auto Sales September 2022

September was another positive month for auto companies as the rise in auto sales continued this month as companies continued to dispatch cars to a dealer during the festive season. There has been a good jump in sales number compared to last year because of the enhanced supply of semiconductors, lower base effect vis-à-vis the previous year, and commencement of the festive season.

The domestic passenger vehicle (PV) industry reported its best-ever monthly sales performance in September at 3,55,946 units, a growth of 91% year-on-year. The industry continues to grow strongly, and experts believe the demand to remain strong in the medium term. Let us look at Auto sales numbers for September from top carmakers in India.

Auto Sales: Passenger Vehicles Sales September 2022

Maruti Suzuki Sales September 2022  - India's largest carmaker, reported a growth in its domestic passenger vehicle (PV) to 1,48,380 units in September. In September 2021, the company sold 63,111 units. Sequentially, the sales increased from 1,34,166 units in August. The export sales increased to 21,403 units in September 2022 compared to 17,565 units in September 2021.

Sales of mini cars, including Alto and S-Presso increased to 29,574 units, against 14,936 in the same month last year. Similarly, sales in the compact segment, including models such as Swift, Baleno, Celerio, Ignis, and Dzire, increased more than 4X to 72,176 units against 20,891 cars in September 2021. Sequentially, the numbers for the mini and compact segments were up. Utility vehicle sales, including S-Cross, XL6, Vitara Brezza, and Ertiga, increased to 32,574 units from 18,459 vehicles in the year-ago month.

Hyundai Sales September 2022 - The company recorded a sales increase of 38% in September 2022 compared to last year. Hyundai sold 63,201 cars including exports in September 2022, compared to 45,791 cars in the same month last year. Sequentially, sales were up from 62,210 units at a volume gain of 991 units, representing 1.6% sales growth.

Hyundai's domestic wholesales stood at 49,700 units in September 2022, up 50% compared to 33,087 units in September 2021. The exports in September rose from 12,704 to 13,501 units in the year-ago period.

Creta continues to dominate the mid SUV space with an increase of 36% in bookings for September over the last year. Hyundai expects to surpass the record sale figures it had logged in 2018-19 at just over 500,000 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra Sales 2022- The company continues to see very strong demand and performance across a portfolio of products, from SUVs to utility vehicles. The company sold 34,508 units under the PV category, a growth of 163% year-on-year. The cars and vans declined by 8% under PV. Mahindra’s Utility Vehicles segment recorded its highest monthly sales of 34,262 SUVs, growing 166% over last year to become the No. 1 UV player in the industry.

Tata Motors Sales September 2022 - The third-largest car manufacturer has managed to sell 47,654 passenger vehicles in India in September 2022, a growth of 85% year-on-year. Sequentially, the total PV domestic sales increased marginally from 47,166 units.

In the PV ICE segment, Tata Motors sold 43,999  units, a growth of 78% year-on-year. The company’s electric vehicle PV business in September continues to shatter all previous month's records. Tata Motors sold 3,655 EVs in September 2022, registering a 239% year-on-year growth. In the year-ago period, it sold only 1,078 EVs.

With the recent launch of the Tiago EV, the company has opened new vistas and is poised to drive the mass adoption of EVs across the country. Going forward, Tata Motors expects the festive season will witness strong retail on the back of an improving supply of vehicles.

Two Wheeler Sales in September 2022 in India

Bajaj Auto Sales September 2022 - In the two-wheeler space, Bajaj Auto's domestic sales stood at 2,22,912 units for September month, a growth of 28% when compared to 1,73,945 units in the year-ago period. The company made the highest ever sales of 'Platina'. During the same period, two-wheeler exports stood at 1,25,443 units, which is a decline in sales by 33% compared to September 2021, when Bajaj Auto exported 1,87,091 units.

Hero MotoCorp Sales 2022With sales of 5,07,690 units of motorcycles and scooters in September 2022, the company registered a increase in sales of 0.4% over the same month of the previous fiscal when it sold 5.05 lakh units. Motorcycles commanded a 92.35% share in September 2022, marginally up from 92.28% held in September 2021. Scooter sales declined year-on-year to 31,809 units in August 2022 from 33,270 units sold in August 2021. Domestic sales increased by 2.9%, while exports declined by 50.39%. 

Hero MotoCorp, launched the Hero GIFT- Grand Indian Festival of Trust to mark the beginning of this year’s auspicious festive season. It also launched the new Xtreme 160R Stealth 2.0 edition at an attractive price of Rs. 1,29,738/- (ex-showroom Delhi).

The company entered into a collaboration with HPCL to establish charging infrastructure for Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the country. Hero MotoCorp announced the appointment of Indian superstar, Ram Charan as the new brand ambassador.  

TVS Motors Sales September 2022- For TVS, the total two-wheelers sales grew from 332,511 units in September 2021 to 361,729 units in September 2022. Domestic two-wheelers business registered a decent growth of 16%, with sales increasing to 283,878 units in September 2022 from 244,084 units in September 2021.

The motorcycles segment registered sales of 1,69,322 units in September 2022, as against 1,66,046 units in September 2021, a growth of 2%. Scooter sales grew from 1,04,091 units in September 2021 to 1,44,356 units in September 2022, a growth of 39%. 

TVS Motor has had a robust start to the festive season and the demand is expected to further accelerate during the season.

Commercial Vehicle Sales in September 2022 in India:

Mahindra and Mahindra CV sales 2022 - In the Commercial Vehicles segment, Mahindra sold 4,452 LCV < 2T (192% growth year-on-year), 16,413 LCV 2T - 3.5T (126% growth year-on-year) and 801 LCV > 3.5T + MHCV (17% growth year-on-year) in September 2022. Overall, the Commercial Vehicles business continues to deliver strong performance registering strong growth across segments.

Tata Motors CV sales 2022 - Total domestic Commercial Vehicle sales for September 22 stood at 32,979 units compared to 30,258 units in September 2021, a growth of 9%. Domestic sales of MH&ICV in September 2022, including trucks and buses, stood at 9,983 units, compared to 8,609 units in September 2021. CV exports however shrunk sharply by 22% due to the economic situation in Sri Lanka and Nepal though they improved sequentially by ~30%. The recent exciting launches of the new range of smart trucks in MHCV and ILCV, and best‐in‐class pickups will help the company serve customers better.

Bajaj Auto CV sales 2022 - In the commercial vehicle segment, Bajaj sold 31,752 units in September in the domestic market compared to 18,403 units in September 2021, registering a good growth of 73%. Exports were down as the company was able to export only 14,640 units compared with 22,582 units sold in the year-ago period. Bajaj’s overall commercial vehicle sales in September 2022 saw decent growth of 13% compared to the previous year.

Tractors Sales in September 2022 in India

Mahindra & Mahindra tractor sales 2022 - Total tractor sales (Domestic + Exports) during September 2022 were at 47,100 units, as against 40,331 units for the same period last year. Exports for September month stood at 1613 units.

Escorts tractor sales 2022 - Escorts' domestic tractor sales increased 42.7% year-on-year to 11,384 units in September 2022 from 7,975 units sold in September 2021. The company reported its highest ever domestic sales. Escorts recorded a gain of 0.8% in export as it exported 848 units of tractors in September 2022 as against 841 units in September 2021. Overall, the total increase in sales year-on-year stood at 38.7%.
