Auto Sales December 2022: Why Did Car Sales Drop On A Sequential Basis?

Last updated:
Auto Sales December 2022

December was a mixed bag for the automobile industry. The sales of passenger vehicles were stable in December but reported a drop on a month-on-month basis. The commercial vehicle sales increased, the two-wheeler segment growth was at a slow pace, and tractor sales reported healthy growth in December. Factors like persistent hikes in two-wheeler prices, inflationary pressures, weak rural demand, and increased ownership costs have resulted in tepid two-wheeler demand for most of 2022.

Among the key players, Maruti Suzuki reported a decline, and Tata Motors and Hyundai reported growth year-on-year. Kia India reported maximum growth in domestic sales YoY. For the calendar year 2022, the industry reported record-high sales at 37.93 lakh units against 30.81 lakhs in 2021.
