Automobile Sales Update for April 2022

Major Automakers posted a positive trend in sales figures with a rise in units sold in the domestic market. Companies mentioned that the shortage of electronic components had a minor impact on the vehicle production in April month.

Below are updates from all major car-makers in India:

Passenger Vehicle

Maruti Suzuki - India's largest carmaker, reported a decline in its domestic passenger vehicle (PV) by 10.22% to 1,21,995 units in April. In April 2021, the company had sold 1,35,879 units. The exports grew 6.8% to 18,413 units in April 2022 compared to April 2021.

Last month, sales of mini cars, including Alto and S-Presso, fell to 15,491 units against 24,653 in the same month last year. Similarly, sales in the compact segment, including models such as Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno, and Dzire, increased marginally to 82,314 units against 82,201 cars in March 2021. Utility vehicle sales, including Vitara Brezza, S-Cross, and Ertiga, declined to 25,001 units from 26,174 vehicles in the year-ago month.

Hyundai - The company recorded a sales decline of 10% in the month of April 2022. Hyundai sold 44,001 cars in April 2022 as against 49,002 cars in the same month last year. The company had sold 44,600 cars in March 2022, as the Month-On-Month sales decline is marginal.

While domestic sales declined, Hyundai improved its exports. The company exported 12,200 cars in April 2022 as against 10,201 cars in the same month last year recording YoY growth of 19.60%.

Mahindra - The Passenger Vehicles segment (which includes UVs, Cars, and Vans) sold 22526 vehicles in April 2022. In April 2021, the total passenger vehicles sold were 18285. Exports for the month were at 2703 vehicles. Demand across products continues to be robust with strong booking numbers and pipelines. There were many supply chain challenges due to the lockdown in China. 

Tata Motors - The third-largest car manufacturer has managed to sell 41,587 passenger vehicles in India in April 2022. With 39,265 units sold in April this year, the company’s ICE PV sales registered a YoY growth of 60% as in the same month last year, the company’s sales stood at 24,514 units. The company’s electric vehicle PV business shattered all previous records. Tata Motors sold 2,322 EVs in April 2022, registering a staggering 300% YoY growth as in the same period last year.

2 Wheeler Sales:

The two-wheeler segment saw a rise in sales over April last year; motorcycles sales were up.

Hero Motocorp - The company reported a double-digit growth of 12.4% over the corresponding month of the previous year (April 2021), when the company had sold 372,285 units. Motorcycles commanded a 93.79% share in April 2022 up from 91.11% held in April 2021. Scooter sales dipped 21.21% YoY to 25,995 units in April 2022, down from 32,956 units sold in April 2021. The domestic sales increased while the exports declined.

TVS - For TVS, total two-wheelers sales grew by 24%, from 226,193 units in April 2021 to 280,022 units in April 2022. Domestic two-wheeler sales grew by 37%, from 131,386 units in April 2021 to 180,533 units in April 2022. Motorcycle sales grew by 4%, from 133,227 units in April 2021 to 139,027 units in April 2022. Scooter sales of the Company grew by 57%, from 65,213 units in April 2021 to 102,209 units in April 2022. 

Bajaj Auto - In the two-wheeler space, Bajaj Auto's domestic sales stood at 93,233 units last month, a decline of 26% when compared to 1,26,570 units. Exports declined by 1,88,478 units in April 2022, against 2,21,603 units in April 2021. 

Commercial Vehicle:

Mahindra - In the Commercial Vehicles segment, Mahindra sold 17402 vehicles in April 2022 with a growth of 23%. All the Light Commercial Vehicle Segments of <2T, Pickups (2T to 3.5T), >3.5T, and the heavy commercial vehicles continued their growth trajectory in April 2022.

Tata Motors - Domestic sales of MH&ICV in April 2022, including trucks and buses, stood at 12,069 units, compared to 6,466 units in April 2021. Total sales for MH&ICV Domestic & International Business in April 2022, including trucks and buses, stood at 12,524 units compared to 7,366 units in April 2021. 

Tractors Sales

Mahindra - Total tractor sales (Domestic + Exports) during April 2022 were at 40939 units, as against 27523 units for the same period last year. Exports for the month stood at 1534 units.

Escorts - The company reported a growth of 20.2% in domestic tractor sales to 7,676 units in April 2022. The company had sold 6,386 units in April 2021. Total tractor sales during last month stood at 8,325 units as against 6,979 units in April 2021, up 19.3%.
